Bei einem Bürgerdialog fragt ihn eine schwer krebskranke Frau, warum bei der Gesundheitsversorgung gespart wird, aber die Bundesregierung sich massiv die Gehälter erhöhen wollte. Merz fährt die Frau unwirsch an: "Zu keinem Zeitpunkt ist erwogen worden, die Bezüge der Bundesregierung anzuheben." Das ist schlicht falsch (oder gelogen). Zunächst war eine massive Gehaltserhöhung für Kanzler und Minister geplant.

IRAN REJECTS U.S. ‘SELF-DEFENSE’ CLAIM
Iran has sharply dismissed U.S. justification for its involvement in the conflict, calling it “absolutely NOT self-defense” and instead “an act of aggression.”
A U.S. State Department statement argued the action supports Israel and counters threats from Iran’s missile program and potential nuclear ambitions. Iran rejects this, saying no attack was made to justify self-defense and accusing Washington of misleading the world.
Tehran continues to deny pursuing nuclear weapons, noting that international inspectors have found no evidence of a weapons program despite longstanding claims to the contrary.

This is the problem. BoJ is currently sitting at 0.75% while the Fed is near 3.75%.
that 300bp spread is basically a neon sign telling every carry trader on the planet to keep selling yen. three members of the BoJ board voted to hike at last week's meeting, the biggest internal split under Ueda's governorship, and the yen still made new lows the next day.
the energy shock makes it worse, because Japan imports 90% of its oil, mostly through Hormuz, and every yen that weakens raises the domestic cost of crude, which feeds inflation, which pressures the BoJ to hike, which it won't do fast enough to matter.
so they intervene and spend the reserves, get a 500 pip reversal, and buy themselves maybe a few weeks before the carry trade flows grind it right back.
it happened in 2024. it's happening again.
