@MarianRTE when Germany unified east Germany was in very poor condition economically but unification has helped to balance things out. The east is still somewhat poorer but the country on a whole is much better off.

@BoyleMo My personal opinion on this orchestra would be that it IS one of the best in the world and one of the most conservative. It’s a known fact. You could watch Beethoven 9 on NYEve too but sadly RTÉ only broadcast this concert and give a very slim view of cl. Music in Europe.

@BoyleMo Another point that is important is that the wind instruments are in fact “Viennese”. This means the horns or the oboes are nearly always from the Conservatories in Vienna/Austria. This is the Viennese Sound but winds from abroad would need to play these instruments...

@BoyleMo This may not seem as much, but to a young Irish female musician these are strides that make me feel more comfortable with this orchestra. They are known for being relatively conservative in the classical world but Vienna is also conservative with an underground culture scene.

@BoyleMo Hi Maureen, I get your point. But this orchestra has developed a lot in the last fifteen years. The co-principal Concertmaster is a Bulgarian woman who studied with one of my professors in Germany. And there is a Romanian woman in the second violins who also studied with me.
