On a day of African-like temperatures, Serengeti an appropriately named 50-1 winner at @WindsorRaces today. You would never have backed him on form!

On another 30 degrees + scorchingly hot day (& it’s still only May!) a timely retweet for my @spectator piece from last summer on why it’s no longer credible to deny that things are hotting up. Yes, we’ve had heatwaves before (and I do remember 1976), but the point is that the FREQUENCY of 30 plus spells in the UK has greatly increased in recent years. Once relatively rare, they are now common. spectator.com/article/why-iv…

Apparently England and Wales is now reduced to a ‘May mayhem’ heatwave with weather maps that look like they have been completely scorched with volcanic ash. Thoughts and prayers. Stay safe everyone. Enjoy the one week of decent weather.

What odds would you have got on @HullCity getting promoted to the Premier League on 21st April after Wrexham beat Oxford 1-0 (a match I was at). Hull looked to be slipping out of play-off contention then, but even after they just managed to sneak back in on the final day they were still the least fancied of the four play-off teams. Great achievement to defy all those odds. #HullCity

@StuartShrugged Whole point is that 1976 was so memorable because it was so unusual back then. But we get these spells of extreme heat (30 plus) regularly now.

The problems with this hot spell (1) there was no gradual build up to it. We’ve gone/are going from a cool 13-14 degrees to a sweltering 30/31 degrees in just 2/3 days. (2) the temperatures topping 30 again, which makes it uncomfortable if you aren’t by the coast. I know there are those who will say ‘its just typical late spring weather’ but that would be the temperature going say from 18 to 24/25 degrees. Certainly these very hot (30 plus) spells seem to be a lot more common in recent years( at least in some parts of the country) and the data backs that up.

My obituary of J J Barrie, who sadly died earlier this month at the age of 92, is in the ‘Lives Remembered’ page of today’s @Daily_Express.

It’s a great headline but sadly the reality of millions in Britain (including those who, like this lady, once earned very good salaries and regarded themselves as middle class), under the cost of living crisis. A huge contrast from 20 years ago when life was much easier for nearly everyone.

At this stage you’d hope Andy Burnham wins the by-election and then becomes Labour leader and PM. Why? He may not be the ‘second coming’ but given there doesn’t have to be a General Election until 2029, he’d surely be better (or at least you’d like to think he’d be better) than PM Starmer or PM Streeting. And that’s basically the choice we have.

My father, Malcolm, died yesterday morning at 6.35. 91 years old. Fantastic life, well lived and a blessedly swift departure. We should all be so lucky. Please pray for his soul.

She’s right in one sense but note how she says ‘war in Iran’ and not ‘war on /against Iran’ which is actually more accurate. The Straits of Hormuz were fully open to shipping before Trump & Netanyahu attacked Iran. But because the US and Israel are allies Reeves can’t say this. (Unlike with Ukraine where there’s no problem blaming Putin for price rises.)
Rachel Reeves@RachelReevesMP

The war in Iran is pushing up prices at the pump, so we're stepping in. We are extending the 5p fuel duty cut until the end of the year- keeping costs lower for millions of drivers. We have the right economic plan to protect households and build a stronger Britain.

It’s not binary. You are right that the top teams win the trophies. Usually irrespective of who is the manager. But O’Neill achieved success everywhere, not just at serial winners Celtic but at Wycombe, Leicester, Villa, ROI and as a player too. He must have something about him. Put another way. He could take over Rotherham next week and you wouldn’t bet against them being in the Championship under him in three years.

@NeilClark66 I don’t understand why you and others fetishise managers? The top teams, historically, tend to win the trophies irrespective of who happens to be the manager at any given time. Success is cyclical. Put the cleaner in charge and he would win the title for Celtic.

For all the disappointment many neutrals will feel over Hearts not winning the SPL- one thing must not be overlooked. The record of Martin O’Neill . Whether as a player (Nottm Forest/Norwich/N. Ireland) or manager (Wycombe, Leicester, Villa, ROI, Celtic) the man’s record of success is extraordinary. No other manager could delivered Celtic the title this year.
