Here's a mind-blowing improvement which most people are unaware of: The cost of solar panels ($/watt), dropped by 400 times. Today solar electricity is cheaper than fossil fuels in many parts of the world. gapminder.org/54

With the Tories' climate credentials in disarray, it seems like a good moment to recall this iconic frontpage of the Times from 33 years ago... "Margaret Thatcher called yesterday for a 'giant international effort' to save the Earth from the consequences of global warming"

Britain can no longer claim to be leading on the climate crisis and that is shameful.

Outside of science, acknowledging mistakes and changing one’s mind is often regarded as weakness when it’s really a strength. Nowadays, acknowledging that many issues are complex with both sides of a debate having a point is called sitting on the fence and also seen as weakness.

Yesterday, Antarctic sea ice extent hit a new record statistical low of -6.65σ below the 1991-2020 mean. About a 1-in-70B chance w/o climate change. This is not a graph of extent or anomaly. It is a graph of standard deviations -- a measure of how abnormal the year's data is.

Wow, just wow. The planet is breaking. Antarctic sea ice extent is the headline for me this morning. There was actually a net *decrease* in ice extent day over day, and it's mid-winter there, peak freeze season. Extent is now 6.4 standard deviations below the 1991-2020 mean.

@stepsupportcam This is a marvellous result which I enjoy teaching to my Further Maths pupils. However, there is a typo in your Hint! It is correct in the marvellous STEP database stepdatabase.maths.org/database/# But both start with a bigger mistake: 1 = 0 not 1 = 0 + 1
