Free speech alone is insufficient. A society can let everyone talk and still drown if people never learn to think with discipline and resist the comfort of instant certainty. Scientists just built a robot that runs on living fungus. Researchers at Cornell integrated mycelium, the root network of fungi, directly into a robotic control system. Mycelium naturally produces electrical signals when it reacts to light, pressure, UV radiation, or chemicals. Electrodes detect those changes and translate them into movement. So when the fungal network’s electrical activity shifts, the robot responds. The point isn’t that a mushroom “learned to walk.” The point is that a living biological system is being used as part of a machine’s control loop. Why that matters: Living systems are incredibly energy efficient. They adapt to complex, messy environments. They respond to chemical changes that traditional sensors struggle to detect. And they do it without massive computational overhead. If this scales, it opens the door to: • Environmental monitoring systems that respond directly to soil chemistry • Low-power sensing networks for agriculture or disaster zones • Adaptive soft robots that handle unpredictable terrain better than rigid machines It’s early stage research. But it represents a shift from building machines that only mimic biology to building machines that actually integrate it.
