Levodopa or L-Dopa has been available for over 50 years and guess how easy it is to get in Kenya? It is NOT easy. Accessibility of all Parkinson's disease medicines is quite limited across sub-Saharan Africa as Natasha Fothergill-Misbah and colleagues nail it with this important piece in @MDJ_Journal.
Key points:
- The authors point out that lack of levodopa has profound negative health, social and financial consequences.
- They sought the perspective of persons w/ Parkinson's disease, caregivers and neurologists.
- 55 folks w/ Parkinson's, 23 caregivers and 8 neurologists.
- Parkinson's medicines were largely unavailable and unaffordable across Kenya.
- There was financial burden triggered by the need for long-term treatment.
My take: We need to pay more attention to everyone on the planet who has Parkinson's, and we need to get them levodopa. Whether it is through local growing programs w/mucuna or through world coalitions like we did with HIV/AIDS drugs, we need to act. BRAVO to these authors and also kudos to the World Health Organization @WHO for beginning to recognize, mobilize and think about solutions. The time to act is NOW. Check out the 6 actions steps from the recent WHO group. Let's get to work.
