@scriptwren I am always glad I did shift work and got to enjoy parenting. Look back on that fondly and highly recommend any wannabe hands on dad's to do the night feeds, school runs, school plays, homework and maintain an interest in their child's lives.

@Neutralsnarf Sometimes, yes at the weekends. I try to be fair about him but I was left alone a lot to parent while he worked (I worked too but I gave up my tv career to work as a TA to be more present for kids) Emotionally he was distant and rather cold

One of the saddest moments in my marriage was when I booked a surprise night away/dinner in Suffolk in a lovely pub with dinner, asked my ex to get milk from the garage then picked him with his overnight bag packed, and said ‘hop in’. He was so angry and miserable the whole time.

@Neutralsnarf This is quite a lot to unpack. FWIW, this happened in the late 90s/early 2000s, way before Covid. He pretty much did what he wanted. By time we separated in 2021 after 21 years of marriage, he had spent years going out on weekend nights leaving me home alone with our children.
