Another October 5th. A very memorable day to me not only because it’s my birthday, but because it marks the anniversary of the death of one of modern societies’ greatest men — Steve Jobs. Coincidentally, we both have/had neuroendocrine cancer, and received organ transplants…🍻
Neville Cole@NevilleVCole

@tim_cook Many do not know that Steve (RIP) died from *NEUROENDOCRINE* tumors (NETs) (ie. cancer; started in his pancreas)—and NOT from the often believed exocrine kind. I have stage 4 NETs (sm. intestine prim. dx’d 2007); in 2019 my brother was dx’d w/ pNET like Steve’s. Read more here:

ELON MUSK: SpaceX will build a mass driver on the moon. "If you want to go beyond a mere terawatt per year, you have to go to the moon. So by having factories on the moon, building AI satellites and having a mass driver, which is the kind of thing you really need to learn about in read about in science fiction, but we're going to make it real. We're actually going to have a mass driver on the moon. And if you do that, you can go several orders of magnitude greater. You can go to 1000 gigawatts or more per year, and ultimately get to maybe a millionth, and then a 1,000th and maybe even a few percent of the sun's energy. I really want to see the mass driver on the moon that is shooting AI satellites into deep space just go like just one after the other. I can't imagine anything more epic than a mass driver on the moon and a self sustaining city on the moon, and then going beyond the moon to Mars, going throughout our solar system, and ultimately, being out there among the stars and visiting all these star systems, maybe we'll meet aliens. Maybe we'll meet see some civilizations that lasted for millions of years, and we'll find the remnants of ancient alien civilizations. But the only way we're going to do that, do that, do that is if we go out there and we explore, and this is the path to making it happen."

@AmanChauhanMD Agreed! It’s time to grow some roots and get the USA’s next generation NETs Center of Excellence up and running. “Build it, and they will come.”

Wrapped up an eventful week with a memorable moment—a wonderful interaction with a lovely patient who first saw me in Kentucky, then followed me to Miami, and now to San Francisco. I’ve officially been given an ultimatum that I’m no longer allowed to move. 🙂 Grateful for incredible patients and the purpose they bring to our work and our lives. Also had a great time recording a podcast episode for NETRF discussing the importance of pathology in neuroendocrine oncology. Stay tuned—it should be an interesting one. I also had the pleasure of co-hosting a webinar on the management of NETs and current evidence-based practices. Always a privilege to collaborate with Dr. Morse from Duke, and heartening to see more than 75 community oncologists join the discussion. The enthusiasm for NETs continues to grow. Last but not least, I finally had the opportunity to work with the great Dr. Alan Venook—one of my first research collaborations at UCSF. Stay tuned, more to come! Oh I also received “world’s greatest dad” award from my kid!! Cant ask for more. Have a wonderful weekend friends!!

@PhilO21102 @Math_files Yeah, except that’s not what he did. Not to mention that you missed the very important “x 10²⁴” part, you simpleton!

In 1798, a scientist effectively “weighed” the Earth — without leaving his laboratory. The English scientist Henry Cavendish designed an incredibly sensitive experiment. Inside a quiet wooden shed, he hung a horizontal rod from a very thin wire. Two small lead spheres were attached to the ends of the rod. Nearby, he placed two much larger lead balls. Because of gravity, the large spheres slightly pulled the smaller ones. The force was extremely tiny — so small that the rod twisted by only a minute fraction of a degree. Yet that tiny twist held a big secret. By carefully measuring this small movement, Cavendish determined the strength of the gravitational attraction between objects. From this, scientists could calculate the mass of the entire Earth. His estimate was remarkably close. Cavendish calculated Earth’s mass to be about 6 × 10²⁴ kilograms, while modern measurements give 5.97 × 10²⁴ kilograms. Sometimes the biggest discoveries come from measuring the smallest forces.

@briantw Very poor battery life, the average battery is ~400 mAh. And the conversion from 9V to 5V on the Arduino is a waste of energy. Much better with 4 x AA in an external holder which can be ~1500 to 3000 mAh.

@AJamesMcCarthy @Xerodeck Tru dat, regarding the constantly changing atmospheric instabilities... Hence, the inventions of image stacking techniques for taking time-exposed astrophotos, space based telescopes, and more recently, adaptive optics (found on the really expensive ground based telescopes).

I modified my backyard telescope to capture the sun for 6 hours yesterday, to watch how this giant sunspot is behaving. Our star doing star things will never not be fascinating.

@Xerodeck @AJamesMcCarthy Definitely *not* CGI. 💯 percent matches any closeup time-lapse video I have ever seen of the sun. The camera’s focus could be steadier, but overall a very decent job.

Starting my new practice at UCSF later this week—and already feeling incredibly energized. Had the chance to attend a stimulating Division of Hematology and Oncology retreat, surrounded by thoughtful, driven colleagues. Looking forward to contributing and growing with this outstanding group. Oh—and next year, I’m ditching the suit and tie. #NeuroendocrineTumors #Theranostics

@LindaSimone1t @ElonMusk_LordX HEY! *I’m* dying of stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer too, and it’s also on *my* bucket list to see a Starship launch! Same about outliving expectations by 10 years (much thanks to the extremely rare “full multi-visceral” type of transplant that I received — involving *6* organs).

Ya know I want to feel the ground shake I want to be afraid I want all the feelings that come with it! Who can grant that wish? Do I have to write some dying letter to someone explaining I’m dying of stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer blah blah well I won’t even though it’s true & I’ve already outlived expectations…why?? I don’t think about it!

@PsychicToni @ElonMusk_LordX They are amazing, and you definitely should see one. I witnessed the second to last launch of the Space Shuttles from the Kennedy Space Center’s Visitor Center, at Cape Canaveral, and I’ll never forget it. Just do it!

Due to weather, we now plan to fuel our Artemis II Moon rocket on Monday, Feb. 2, at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. With this adjustment, the earliest possible launch date is Sunday, Feb. 8. A launch date will be set after teams have reviewed the results of the wet dress rehearsal. Read more: go.nasa.gov/4rrJ9Xc
