@NextSlt @endeverstar Today my 5yo got collected early from school as wasn't feeling well. She lay down in bed, reached for my phone, clicked into WeaveChat and generated "I want drink of water". I am amazed how intuitively she learned to use it. She chose AAC as felt too tired to talk 💗

Feeling really annoyed that an #AAC programme can be locked to #IOS only and not used on #Android. I wanted to install it to let my child support someone who uses it. Imagine if we were only allowed speak if we paid a fee, and had an Apple device. #Autism #Autistic

@NextSlt @endeverstar Started using WeaveChat at home this morning and discovered something nice: For kids who probably have a PDA profile, you can keep tapping your instruction "time to get dressed" and the tone stays the same so parental frustration never enters the conversation. This is brilliant!

@NextSlt @endeverstar This will be very handy. Could even make a toy "AAC" device with printed sheet for playing non-speaking communication games. We play chatting on toy phone so is an extension of that?

@NextSlt @endeverstar I am already enjoying the app! Will be brilliant for the overwhelmed moments in the house for us too.

@msniamhgarvey @endeverstar Enjoy! The developers are very responsive on instagram if you have questions & there are “how to” videos on their website. It’s a lovely thing you & your daughter are doing x

@NextSlt @endeverstar Brilliant thank you! I'm installing Weavechat now. Have been wanted to try an AAC at home for awhile, and a child we know starting to use it is a great motivator! I'll start using it at home now. Delighted with your help!

@msniamhgarvey @endeverstar Absolutely. Just if it’s not poss to have the same app, it wld be a way of showing AAC is valid & valued in that context if there are other AACs. Also, as the lay-out is often similar (core words on Home Screen, folders with categories..) it wld be nice to explore at home.

Allowing time and space for someone to speak when they are struggling is vitally important but can be very hard to do. @michaelsheen gives a masterclass here. And what an interesting question! #TheAssembly #Autism

Coming 18 th july 🎉 I adored writing this book. I wanted to tell #Autistic kids that it IS nornal and IS okay to be autistic. The book also explains what being autistic actually means. Illustrated by fellow Autistic @theorah. Read some reviews here: uk.jkp.com/products/being…

If you’d like to learn more about AAC, I’m running a Fundamentals of Symbolic AAC course with @synergyadulted at the end of the month.

By the way, I just want to acknowledge that you can be an effective non-symbolic communicator, and I’m sure Mr. Beukleman would agree

I often think about this quote from D.R. Beukleman. There’sso much effort & cost for families & individuals in getting an aac device - but only then does the real work start. Communication is about people, not devices, so using this new method can be a huge shift for all of us.
