I ask these questions with genuine curiosity having been on both sides of recruitment in the last year. Things seem to have changed over the years so keen to know expectations of recruitment into healthcare. Do people routinely contact the recruiter named in the job advert? 1/2
During WWI, due to economy, it was not uncommon for soldier-patients to make physiotherapy equipment for the hospital treating them. Physiotherapy at Bath Hospital c.1918 @ExploreWellcome@thecsp#historyofphysio
Wonderful photo of one of the first rehabilitation spaces in the UK @KingsCollegeNHS c.1900. As pic shows early physio was intricately linked to the rehabilitation of disabled children. Today @thecsp campaign to save these spaces @ExploreWellcome
@RobYeldham@thecsp Exactly! Physiotherapy has very ancient and diverse roots, it was professionalised in the UK by these pioneering ladies in response to sex scandals around the practice of massage. They were all nurses who 'did' massage before they started the STM.
@NiasKay@thecsp@thecsp was established as the Society of Trained Masseuses by Lucy Marianne Robinson, Rosalind Paget, Elizabeth Anne Manley and Margaret Dora Palmer. They invented a new profession in doing so. Perhaps why the CSP and the profession are often seen as synonymous?
The founding members of the @thecsp wore these uniforms in 1898... although there has been lots of changes to physio uniforms over the years... it's still a topic of debate! #histofphysio#medhist
@NiasKay Hi Kay, I'm writing a history of South African PT, & can't find any info on the term "medical gymnastics" - the original name for the profession here, as in Britain, was "CHARTERED SOCIETY OF MASSAGE AND MEDICAL GYMNASTICS". Do you have any sources on the term's origin?
One of my favourite photos from the #historyofphysio. The Edgar Allen Institute, Sheffield, one of the earliest (but little known) rehabilitation gyms established in 1911, full of Zander equipment for exercise rehab. @ExploreWellcome@thecsp
Funny to now be embarking on some new research into the digital transformation of physiotherapy after studying its history for so long... here's a short but sweet blog I once wrote for wonderful @wellcometrustwellcomecollection.org/articles/XTW9o…
@NiasKay@wellcometrust Hope you find researching the role of #DigitalPhysio in the transformation of the future of the profession as interesting as the history! I certainly do! Anything I can do to help please reach out
