Per a source, John Groce has informed the Akron team he’s leaving for Charleston.

NEWS: Akron’s John Groce has emerged as the top target in Charleston’s head coach search, sources told ESPN. Nothing is done and steps remain for both sides in the next 24 hours, but there’s mutual interest. Groce has led the Zips to four of the last five NCAA tournaments.

Akron head coach John Groce is leaving after 9 seasons for the College of Charleston. Half a dozen schools had Groce on their list. Charleston was able to get him. He leaves the Zips as 2nd winningest head coach in school history. He won four MAC titles & went 197-94.

Charleston has hired Akron head coach John Groce, source told @thefieldof68.
Groce, 54, has taken the Zips to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and gone dancing four of the last five seasons.
Groce will replace Chris Mack, who left Charleston after two seasons to take the South Florida job.
Groce is 377-225 in his career. He was also the head coach at Ohio (2008-12) and Illinois (2012-17).
