New Perspectives on Displacement Article from the RSQ: Dr. Romola Sanyal asks in an age of urban displacement, how does refuge seek to construct a specific group of people that are distinct from the poor, and how is this distinction problematic? academic.oup.com/rsq/advance-ar…

To borrow the words of Van Heuven Goedhart, the first UNHCR, the situation captured on this photograph (NYT today) should burn holes in our conscience.

The African COVID-19 book shelf, we dare hope, will particularly welcome this one! Responses to COVID-19 in Africa mostly exacerbated the vulnerability of a great many Africans, who already had historical layers of underlying conditions.

When #resettlement is unattainable, how do displaced individuals whose #refugee status has been revoked sustain hope, contest exclusion, and navigate the uncertainties of protracted displacement? In my new article, “Waithood and Creativity in the Absence of Resettlement: Evidence from ‘Residual’ Liberian Refugees in Nigeria,” published in @ERSjournal as part of the Special Issue on “Refugee Resettlement as an Institution,” I analyse how resettlement, rather than being a purely bureaucratic process, endures as a deeply embedded aspiration, a site of resistance, and a contested terrain where post-cessation populations negotiate futures that remain structurally foreclosed to them. Full text here: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10… Many thanks to the guest editors @RawanArar @molly_fee @hebagowayed @blair_sackett and reviewers for their invaluable feedback and support in shaping this piece.

Good to see these guidelines for librarians! I spent a day in a London public library recently, and was impressed to see the number of refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants coming in for advice, information, internet access and a warm place to sit. fm-cab.blogspot.com/2024/12/new-re…
