I travelled by train from Edinburgh to London today. I must have passed a thousand fields on the way yet I didn’t see a single farmer. What are these people doing all day? Probably sat on their butts watching GBNews and moaning about paying tax as the rest of us work. Disgusting

@FavColour_Green @DogImaginary @Sarahcoxon8 Every day a school day, thank you. Excellent thread explaining hedgerow management. Isn’t it great how engaged people can become when a balanced, well-informed perspective is clearly presented?

@NickFoneMedia @DogImaginary @Sarahcoxon8 Fewer than half of our hedges are enclosure act hedges, the rest are a lot older (some up to 5000 years!) BUT you are very right that they are a man-managed habitat and require periodic management to survive. Something we forget at their peril!

I was at a *fabulous* farm in Kent yesterday talking hedges They'd organised a coppicing demonstration for the cluster group. This was a 25year old hawthorn maiden hedge. Coppicing will thicken this up from the base, turning each stem into a multi-stemmed bush

@DogImaginary @FavColour_Green @Sarahcoxon8 We’ve just done a 300m stretch alongside a footpath and were bracing ourselves for backlash from members of the public who didn’t understand what we were doing. Quite the reverse, everyone has been very supportive

@DogImaginary @FavColour_Green @Sarahcoxon8 Coppicing hedges appears drastic but is the most effective way to generate fresh regrowth from the base to make for thick, wildlife-friendly hedge within a year. Done rotationally, within ten years an entire farm can have top class wildlife corridors right round it.

Many of you who know me well will be aware that 2024 has been hugely challenging for me and this little event had to be postponed. But I was now able graduate with a PhD in soil science. Thank you to all who have helped me on the journey you know who you are.

⚠️ HMRC has announced a taxation change from 1 July 2024 that will raise the charges for the majority of double-cab pickup owners. Under the new rules, double-cab pickups will be classed as company cars – not vans – for taxation purposes. FULL STORY: fwi.co.uk/business/hmrc-…

@suesustainable @Slug_95 Sadly your ‘wrong assumptions’ only serve to diminish your argument which is principle is sound. The stubble is clearly cereal residue. We’d all love to see green covers year round but the reality is that it’s not always possible. @timstephensuk
