@StevieYBurner He’s not a good GM. He took all of Brisebois’ credit in Tampa and made himself look good. But hey, maybe by year 10 the Wings will sneak into a wild card spot!!

I think a lot of the naysayers are expecting Yzerman to capture Lightning in a bottle twice, when these were the rosters in Tampa. Go back 7 years and look at the dumpster fire he took on from Ken Holland.

@MikeBartner If Red Wings fans could separate Yzerman the player from Yzerman the GM they’d realize his tenure as the Wings GM has been a disaster. They’ll still be blaming Holland for Yzerman’s failures in year 15. If it was any other GM they’d be calling for his head.

In my opinion Steve Yzerman should NOT get a pass if the Red Wings miss the playoffs and his heat should be scorching. 50/50 if you keep him and that 2027 season would fully be playoffs or fired.

Holland overspent and made stupid moves that ran the '08 team into the ground instead of trying to keep the organization moving forward. I simply can’t give up on Yzerman and this rebuild based on all of that alone. He’s got my respect through and through. #LGRW

@sixusher @JFreshHockey I think today it’s really as simple as Hellebuyck stole them the gold medal, not much more Canada could’ve done. Overall I agree with you, especially on Parayko.

@JFreshHockey Its hard to pinpoint a true weakness, binner did his job. Defence definitely had weak parts with sanheim and parayko not really contributing anything, and 3rd and 4th lines didnt play like stars that they are

Immediate lessons learned for 🇨🇦 1. Tournament mostly went very well, don't need to totally rethink 2. D puck-moving and + finishing need to be more of a priority over puck-carrying 3. Maybe more of a premium on finishing for non-star forward picks

@Grifeweizen @mcclxskey @billburr I complained about 3v3 when we beat the Czechs too 🤷‍♂️ it’s a dumb way to decide this level & magnitude.

@mcclxskey @billburr Canadians shouldn't be bitching about 3 on 3 at all. If they were "clearly the better team" maybe they should have won in regulation? This isn't the NHL, the rules are different. It is what it is.

Canada fans bitching about 3 on 3! 🤣 Didn’t hear them complaining when they lost to us. They had to beat another team to make it to the final. And then they got to play us for the championship. At that point we had to go 2-0 against team Canada to be declared champs, and all they had to do was be 1 and 1.

Nathan MacKinnon loves playing big game hockey. Scored with elimination on the line against Czechia. Scored today in clutch time to secure Canada's shot at gold. It's unbelievable. I expect nothing less Sunday.

Time to tell the truth. Calvin Pickard's record before the goalie trade on December 12: Oct 11 vs VAN: W (3-1) Oct 18 @ NJD: L (5-3) Calvin Pickard, 5. This loss was not on him. His teammates kept screwing up big time. Sharp early. Stoned Hischier on a 5-alarm stab on net early on, then thwarted Mercer on Podz’s uggo turnover and Jack Hughes on Draisaitl’s equally uggo turnover, topping it off by intercepting Hughes’ ill-advised seam pass on the rebound. But beat by the rushing Jack Hughes. Thwarted Hischier’s 5-alarmer off Frederic’s slot turnover, then stopped Palat point-blank as no one covered the danger man. He got rammed on a break-in by Hischier, then looked iffy on Jesper Bratt’s backhand deke and goal. Little chance on Brown’s breakaway, but came up huge again on Hischier’s subsequent shorthanded 5-alarmer. - @dstaples, @edmontonjournal Oct 23 vs. MTL: W (6-5) - his team's best player CALVIN PICKARD. 6. Would not have been a contest without him. Two difficult early saves off Evans and Suzuki (which they needed video review on). Could not stop the rebound on the 1-0, in part because his defenceman neglected to check the Canadien alone in front. Who would blame the goalie on that? Really tough stop off a fine, high Caufield deflection later in the first. Could have been 3-1 after 1 without Pickard. Forced into a stop on Caufield early in the second when the Hab beat Nurse to the net. A stop on Matheson through coverage. Got a pad on a Suzuki wraparound. But then came the 3-2 on a turnover, and Bouchard turnstile-d on the 3-3. You would like a save on the 4-3 but Caufield had all kinds of time to pick his spot. The 5-3 is a Canadien player left all along in the deep slot. That was all Pickard would allow the rest of the way, stopping 22 of 27 for the “W”. You maybe want one back, but that’s it. - @KurtLeavins, @edmontonjournal Oct 26 @ VAN: OTL (4-3) CALVIN PICKARD. 6. Made three important stops in the opening ten minutes on DeBrusk, Sherwood and Reichel. Fooled by Boeser who tucked his backhand five-hole for the 2-1 which came on a broken play and bad line change. He had stopped Garland on the PP just ahead of the 2-0, a Petterson slapper against the grain from the right faceoff dot. Big stop off Boeser on a subsequent man advantage. The 3-1 is a breakaway goal. Big third period denials on Joseph, Reichel and Sasson. No chance on the OT deflection. Stopped 23 of 27. - @KurtLeavins, @edmontonjournal Nov 3 @ STL: L (3-2) CALVIN PICKARD. 6. Big opening toe save on a Thomas wraparound to prevent St. Louis from taking an early lead. That was a tough stop. And he followed that up with solid stops on Buchnevich, Bjugstad and a third through a tough screen from Joseph. Gave his team the opportunity for a lead after the first 20. Started the next 20 just as strong: A blocker on Broberg and nabbed a dangerous puck from a Suter chance right in front. Robbed Suter again a few shifts later. Did not get over to his post in time to handle the PP one timer for the 2-1 goal. Had come out to face a shot from the slot which rattled wide, grabbed by Thomas and then banked off the post, Pickard and in for the 2-2. Sharp glove on Holloway part way through the third. Made the initial save through heavy traffic but got zero help from his D-man with the rebound. Stopped 19 of 22. Played well enough to win. - @KurtLeavins, @edmontonjournal Nov 8 vs. COL: L (9-1) - Skinner starts, is yanked after 4 goals on 13 shots, replaced by Pickard at 12:32 into the 2nd Period, game already beyond doubt Nov 13 @ CBJ: L (5-4) - Probably the ONLY game his personal performance could've been better Nov 20 @ TBL: OTL (2-1) - his team's best player, also robbed of a shutout because the Oilers blow it late CALVIN PICKARD. 9. Excellent. An early stop on Tampa’s first opportunity of the night, and the Oilers scored the 1-0 soon afterward. Good stop on Paul. Robbed Kucherov in the slot. Then stoned Brayden Point-blank with a terrific right pad save. And two more stops off Guentzel and Paul right near the end of the first. Opened the second with a stop on Bjorkstrand. Stops on Hagel and Paul later in the second. Got just enough of a Concalves shot a couple shifts later. Superhero-like diving save off Hagel early in the second. Corralled a rebound moments later. Stared down Guentzel again later in the third. Little chance on a roof job to tie it at 1-1. The winner was a Bolts two-on-one. Stopped 33 of 55, .943 SV%. The game’s Second Star. - @KurtLeavins, @edmontonjournal Nov 25: vs. DAL: L (8-3) Skinner starts, is yanked after 4 goals on 8 shots, Pickard plays the remainder of the game, game already beyond doubt Stuart Skinner allowed four goals on eight shots in the first period before Calvin Pickard took over in goal to start the second period and made 18 saves. “I really feel like goaltending is a team thing,” said Oilers captain Connor McDavid. “It’s tough for goalies to look good when the group in front of them is not playing well. I don’t really care who it is, when the team in front of them is not playing up to their standards, then it is tough for a goalie to look good. I felt bad for both of them. - @NHLdotcom Dec 4: vs. SEA: W (9-4) Oilers give up playing and allow a 4th goal that was completely preventable with 5 seconds left of the 3rd Period. #PicksBetweenTheSticks™️
