@SuellaBraverman How about building a society where individuals don’t need to resort to crime to thrive? That would have solved the problem. Of course there will always be “wrong uns” that need to be dealt with, but record prison populations signal a deeper societal issue.

Everyone and his mother should run to be leader. But we’ve all got to start taking responsibility for what we did. And for the things we shamefully left undone. Such as not building enough prisons.

I opposed this, both inside & outside government. With 40 MPs, I tabled amendments to the Sentencing Bill to stop the early release of criminals & put public safety first. We managed to stop the government doing it. Labour is picking up Tory ideas & putting the public at risk.
