Friends, psych colleagues: I have finally managed to publish my first academic paper... do have a read if it's your thing. 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for: Early relational–developmental deficits and the search for repair through the erotic' onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ca…

@M_H_Taylor Some proper country stalwarts there - and Walsh was phenomenal. Surprised Dev got so many. And No.7 did well to stick with the county game after the success of Down By The Water

Birdlands out today (possibly my 55th?). I think it might be my best. A crow, a Jackdaw, and a pigeon, each damaged, on a journey to find salvation. Think Watership Down, about birds, as written by Sam Beckett. Fly my beauties, fly! (Except they can't fly, so they have to walk…)

First game of the new season. At least 45 years of this palaver. More bandages every year - but still very excited.

Should a batsman walk or stand their ground and wait for the umpire’s decision? 🤔 Is it about honesty… or just playing within the rules? Would you walk if you knew you were out or back your right to stay until given out? What’s your opinion??

I started thinking about unconditional love, then I started writing about it, and it was quite hard to stop. It seemed simple at first and then not so simple by the end. I’m sure it’s meant to be the other way around… Is unconditional love even possible? substack.com/home/post/p-19…

I'm glad I didn't show myself up earlier and tweet my criticism of @jimmy9 for choosing to bat at @NorthantsCCC - it never ceases to amaze me how I can have such a passion and fascination for cricket yet still manage to make so many poor calls on the subject

If those astronauts go around the moon and can find no trace of Lisa Stansfield’s baby then I really think that’s it, we’ve exhausted all lines of enquiry

For the record, the president of the United States is now simultaneously claiming that he has won the war, is currently winning the war, needs help to win the war, and needs no help to win the war. All to destroy the nuclear program he claims to have already destroyed last year.

@Keirwales Ditto. I think he writes excellently - thoughtful, rigorous, clear - but I was blocked years ago for some incredibly minor quibble, which was a real shame. His Substack is very good though, and I just keep quiet on there😄

I actually really liked how Jonathan would write about therapy and the complexities of helping people. Timely as I’ve been thinking a lot today about clinicians who identify denial as a defence when people don’t share their perspective, then blocking to annihilate dissent.

The feminine urge to get married to someone you love and have children and make a home together until one day your husband comes home and collapses at the kitchen table because his brother died and the grief made him lose his job and he can't keep it together anymore and your children come to you in tears because growing up is learning how to be in pain. You realize that you've spent all these years learning how to love so you can take their grief inside and transform their hurt so they can keep living with a lightness in their spirits and thrive in a world that is doing everything it can to crush them into nothing. And their pain is heavy, it's so goddamn heavy, but you carry all their burdens, that tremendous pile of dirt, with such grace and poise that you make the struggle look like joy and they never have to know it hurt. They will never know because the hurt beams with such brightness when it moves through you.

@SimonBrundish Yes, broadly. Probably scope for a bit of an edit (it's a touch repetitious & could do with a few hyphens to aid comprehension😁) but the building of the layers of the argument and the fundamental freshness v capacity dichotomy is clear. A nice insight into a world I didn't know.

I love being a wife. I love being loved. I love that I get to fold clothes so my husband has nice things to wear and make him dinner and nourish him and see the way he smiles when I bring it to him. I love the way my daughter yells "Daddy" and races for the door when she sees him drive home. I love the way I see my diamond ring flash everytime I move my hand to remind me there should be a throughline of love in every motion. I love the way he opens doors for me and jokingly acts angry if I try to open a door myself. I love our long conversations about religion and writing and human nature that last for hours into the night. I love how I can barely even remember what our first kiss felt like, because the millionth seems even better. I love running a business together. I love that every day is an opportunity to understand more about another human being, to become more aligned with the Real, to become better than one self.
