I was single / dating for 6 years after my divorce and here’s one thing I’m doing differently….. As someone who is on their second time “doing life with another human” We choose to honor the five distinct roles we play together: 1. Roommates: we manage a home together 2. CoParents: we are raising kids together 3. Coworkers: we work out of the same home and support one another’s career 4. Friends: we like to hang out together and do things 5. Lovers: we desire one another It’s easy to let the first 3 roles shadow the last 2. This is my priority with them. Leaving tomorrow for a 10 day trip to Scotland with my partner to prioritize #4 and #5. Don’t let life get in the way of living.

@jappleby I’m in the UK and seeing your health insurance cost has blown my mind 🤯 our healthcare is free here, and even if I wanted to pay for private healthcare, I think it would be circa £100 for a family of 4.

Well, I bought health insurance for myself today. ($972/month, because America) Haven't had it in a year. I've been riding dirty since I started my own business, mostly out of fear, resentment, and some self-sabotage. It's the first big step in righting some long-overdue life needs. The long & short of it: my family had disastrous financial events go down my senior year of college, leading to baddd trust issues and worse behavior—bad enough that I elected to separate myself from them a year later. Because the fun never stops, I also ended an increasingly-toxic 4-year relationship & engagement that same month. So right at that moment where you start running your own life, asking parents for all the tips on 401Ks, doctor's appointments, financial planning, and just generally how to be a person, I was fully on my own. Oh, and my ex was my accountant. So, I... didn't really do anything. And never took care of business. Missed filing my taxes for years. Let my auto-insurance lapse that one time, which I didn't realize until I got in an accident. Only saw doctors when I tore a muscle or needed stitches. Financial planning? LOL, definitely not. I burned through money, didn't save, and refused to even think about it. Somehow lost bills that went to collections, even when I could afford to pay them. Didn't get therapy until the whole public presence thing finally got to me. Why? Who knows. A mixture of weird trauma reactions. A lot of paralysis after all the fam stuff went down. Finances triggered the hell out of me (the family nonsense was money-related)—couldn't even think about them for the longest time. And probably as much as anything, self-sabotage in an attempt to get their attention & affection... which... how would that work if I wasn't speaking to them. Trauma is weird. But, um... I'm 35 now. I want to take the next steps in life—get married, have kids, inevitably tear my ACL playing ball with hoopers half my age. Even though I've cleaned up much of the above, there's plenty I haven't (see: delaying health insurance til now). And after all these years with my hands off the wheel, I want to take more control of my life in every sense. The good news is I've had a great career, both as an employee & while doing my own thing. I've been able to afford the mistakes I've made (which actually probably enabled the problem—could use money as a band-aid instead of fixing the real problems). I have no debt, and I'm projecting to 4x my best advertising salary this year. Some skills, hard work, and a lot of luck saved what could've easily been catastrophic errors. Why share all of this? A few reasons. I think wayyy more people (and specifically millennials) struggle in these areas than we'll ever admit. Health & finances are taboo & complicated. When we can't admit to ourselves where we have work to do, we don't grow. I hope all this normalizes that a bit for anyone struggling in these areas. We also tend to put public figures on a pedestal. While I'm so thankful for everyone who reads the newsletter & tweets or attends my talks, I think it's important to share the rougher sides of this life, especially those that impact the work itself. Just sharing the good with you paints an incomplete picture. Plus, we all know I've always been an oversharer. So yeah. That's one way to share I figured out health insurance (went with @oscarhealth through the NY Marketplace, if you're looking). I'll probably share more in these realms, especially on the financial side as I get my money in order—wanna help other creators plan for their futures. Thanks for reading.
