SLATER SCOOP: Falcons' James Pearce Jr. will have all of his charges dismissed if he completes a program offered to him by the state of Florida, I've learned. While details are still being worked out, Pearce Jr. would have to attend therapy sessions and stay out of trouble over a six-month period. His attorney, Yale Sanford, tells me the victim, Rickea Jackson, and the police officers in this case spoke to the state attorney's office and agreed to this as well.

Billionaire philanthropist Michael Bloomberg and The City Fund have committed $20 million to support public charter schools developed in partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This effort aims to strengthen educational pathways for Alabama students by providing early college experiences. The initiative focuses on two schools: I Dream Big Academy in Tuscaloosa, which opened in August 2025 serving grades 6–8 in partnership with Stillman College, and D.C. Wolfe Charter School in Shorter, set to reopen in fall 2026 in collaboration with Tuskegee University. The schools offer dual-enrollment courses and university faculty access to bridge K–12 and higher education. This funding builds on Bloomberg’s past support for HBCUs and charter schools, including $10 million to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and a $600 million investment in HBCU medical schools. The goal is to expand educational opportunities for students from underrepresented communities. Bloomberg Philanthropies is setting a new precedent for education through HBCU and charter school collaborations to prepare students for success in higher education and beyond.
