TLDR: While we’re still waiting on word from the new RTFKT owners, here’s why Pokémon is headed straight for NFTs…and why the legacy card market could eventually collapse, opening new opportunities for the Pokemon Company. The devastating problem with physical collectibles: they cannot be upgraded to protect against forgery. This matters because the machines that can reproduce fakes are being upgraded on a daily basis and nothing stops that fraudulent freight train. These train tracks lead straight to the inevitable conclusion that every trading card that has been physically produced in all of history will be faked beyond any verification processes ability to discern, and it is only a matter of time. AI will only add coal to the engine. @Pokemon may eventually learn new ways to produce physical cards that can be continually upgraded, but let’s be clear…every card they have ever produced up to the reveal of their new system will be indistinguishable from fake cards…and the clock is ticking. The current printers are near good enough already. Once the fakes are ubiquitous this will likely result in the cratering of the historical card market. It’s not happening tomorrow, may not happen for years but the Megadecoy card printer of destruction will land eventually with a game ending critical hit for the legacy cards. It’s not all bad news for Pokemon or their fans. In fact, it may be the best thing to ever happen to the company/fans. The surrender to the logical conclusion will result in the transition to a digital/physical system. Currently if you purchase a pack of Pokemon cards you can scan the QR code included in the pack and download the cards digitally…without property rights of course. You don’t actually own the digital cards as you cannot sell them. There will be a card flippening in the future. At the moment the digital cards are worthless, and the physicals have all of the value, this will reverse. Once they adopt proper digital property rights and provable provenance , the Pokemon company can still sell physical cards but the value and collectibility will transfer to the digital card which, through blockchain chain tech, can be upgraded, verified, traded, and sold quickly. This is great for LGSs also in the short to medium term (Long term we may see a full transfer to full digital). Pokemon fans can walk into their LGS, buy an ETB. Get the physical card and, using a near identical version of the tech they currently have, instantly download the NFT version of the cards in their ETB to their property-right-fueled Pokédex. Now the customer has the physical and digital version of their card. They can then sell/trade/give the digital cards on an exchange (If the Pokemon company is smart they will have the exchange in app) and watch the market soar and still sell the physical card which, unless the company comes up with a verifiable form factor, won’t sell for much. Fans win with property rights, Pokemon holds onto the asset classification that drives their market, and LGSs sell card packs like never before. Obviously guessing here but, how much does this affect The Pokemon Company? Possible 10Xing from here if they offer digital cards equipped with property rights, sell digital card packs with real ownership on their site and collect fees from every transaction on their marketplace for every trade. Other digital marketplaces like EBay, Opensea, and a digital version of TCGplayer would be unable to compete for digital resale if Pokémon’s marketplace had the right profile system with rewards. Maybe you think that fraudsters will stop improving their printers, and that eventually those printers won’t be good enough to create perfect fakes. You don’t like digital cards or digital property rights, in that case… Go News yourself!
