A GP is publicly celebrating his wife's cholesterol at a level that meets diagnostic criteria for familial hypercholesterolemia. Total cholesterol 19 mmol/L is 735 mg/dL. The diagnostic threshold for FH is 7.5 mmol/L. She is more than double it. @lowcarbGP has 40 years of medicine and genuine results helping patients reduce medication through dietary change. That clinical record deserves credit. It does not extend to posting that a cardiologist cleared someone at TC 19 mmol/L without a statin and tagging it to a documentary explaining why not to worry about cholesterol. Precious. The cardiologist is unnamed. The outcome data for untreated TC at that level is not unnamed. @Drlipid has documented what the FH registries show: untreated patients with lifelong elevated ApoB particle burden develop atherosclerosis early and aggressively, independent of every other risk modifier. The question his post never asks: what is her ApoB? What does her coronary imaging show? "The highest cholesterol I have ever seen in 40 years of medicine" is not a reason to relax. It is the reason to measure harder. His wife is not a data point. She is a person with TC 19 mmol/L being told by her husband's documentary that the medicine has been lying to her. Unwinning.
