“Billy, here are the Phillies. Their owner spends the perfect amount of money to where you can’t complain but you also can’t gloat. They have one of the best rotations in the league, an awesome bullpen, and stars in their lineup. Their only defect is, they fucking suck.”

I know it’s only game 4 of 162 and I might be overreacting, but, I hate this team more than anything I’ve ever hated in my life @Phillies

In North America, black bears are apex predators. Except that one time one met Chuck Norris. That bear is now a rug. RIP to the legend.

Lou Holtz looking back at life: "How lucky I am to be married to the person I am, to be in the country we have, to have the children we have... I don't think you live your life in regrets... you can be happy or sad, that's your choice. I choose to be happy." Rest in Peace 🙏

This moment between Lou Holtz and Marcus Freeman is even more special today. Lou left Marcus the keys to success. During his time at Notre Dame he always made sure people understood it was the Catholics VS Conferences. And now? Now the responsibility is ours. This season can’t be casual. It can’t be “wait till next year.” Not after everything Lou built. Not after everything he left behind. We have to do it for him ☘️ #DoItForLou🤞

“Notre Dame mourns the loss of Lou Holtz, a legendary football coach, a beloved member of the Notre Dame family and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Among his many accomplishments, we will remember him above all as a teacher, leader and mentor who brought out the very best in his players, on and off the field, earning their respect and admiration for a lifetime. In the years since leaving the head football coach position, Lou, together with his beloved wife, Beth, supported Notre Dame in innumerable ways, among them making possible the refurbishment of four residence hall chapels and the construction of the Beth and Lou Holtz Grand Reading Room on the first floor of Hesburgh Library — tangible signs of their great love for their Catholic faith and the mission of Our Lady’s University. Whenever Notre Dame called to ask for his help, Lou answered with his characteristic generosity, and he will be sorely missed. The prayers of the entire Notre Dame community are with his family and many friends in this time of sorrow. May he rest in the peace and love of Christ.” - University of Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C.

This story is now more than 25 years old and I have told it more times than I can count, but it hits very differently today. I was anchoring SportsCenter one afternoon and Lou Holtz was on the show. I was quite excited to talk with him, he had been an icon all of my life. He was very friendly, asking me all about myself as we walked toward the studio to record an interview. I told him: “Actually, Coach, it’s quite exciting, my wife and I are expecting our first child in the next few weeks.” He stopped dead in his tracks and put a finger up near my face. And I’ll never forget what he said. “Young man, the most important thing you can do for a child is make sure every day they know how much you love their mother.” And, just like that, he started walking again. Our daughter was born a month later, our son came two years after that. And I have thought about what Lou Holtz said to me that day about a million times since. RIP Coach, thanks for the best advice anyone ever gave me.

Coach Holtz touched so many lives. Those that played for him know he was more than just a coach. He was a mentor, motivator and father figure. For those that knew him, he was an inspiration. From humble beginnings to a National Championship at ND, coach was a winner. Notre Dame prides itself on being a “force for good” & coach Holtz epitomized that. My favorite moment with Coach was before he spoke at a charity event for @3andGFoundation. We sat across from each other on benches at the Eck Visitors Center and he talked about his faith. He made sure I put my faith in Jesus Christ and understood what was most important in life. Coach never took a moment for granted to make a difference. Rest in peace Coach

Marcus Freeman has plenty of people in his corner. Few actually understand what it’s like to be in his shoes and can be a mentor. The late Lou Holtz was one of the few. “He always tells me, ‘I’ll give you my opinion but never any advice.’ But his opinion matters.” RIP, Lou.

RIP Lou Holtz, who may have given the greatest pre-game speech in football history before the Catholics vs. Convicts game: "You have an afternoon to play, a lifetime to remember, but you do me one favor: Save Jimmy Johnson's ass for me."
Lou Holtz@CoachLouHoltz88

Louis Leo “Lou” Holtz, legendary college football coach, Hall of Famer, bestselling author, and one of America’s most influential motivational voices, has passed away at the age of 89 in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by family. Born January 6, 1937, in Follansbee, West Virginia, Holtz rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected figures in college athletics. Over a remarkable five‑decade career, he led college programs at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, and South Carolina.  He transformed every team he inherited and captured the 1988 National Championship with the Fighting Irish. Holtz was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Beth, with whom he shared a life grounded in faith, devotion, and service.   Holtz is remembered for his enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others. His influence extended far beyond the football field through the Holtz Charitable Foundation and the many players, colleagues, and communities shaped by his leadership. He is survived by his four children, nine grandchildren, and two great‑grandchildren. Funeral arrangements, including a Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame, will be announced as details are finalized. The Holtz Family
