Manish Jain did not set out to build a dairy-tech company. For the first 13 years of his career, he worked in money management and mutual fund advisory, far removed from agriculture. The shift began in 2006, when he made a routine investment in a large private dairy company. What started as investor curiosity soon took him to the field. As he began accompanying on-ground teams, Manish Jain saw the realities of dairy farming up close. Farmers worked long hours, Yet their incomes remained fragile. Over the next 11 years, he spent time studying how small interventions: better genetics, improved nutrition, and structured management, could significantly change outcomes. He watched nearly four lakh farmers improve their livelihoods and realised the potential for much wider impact. In 2017, Manish Jain teamed up with his long-time colleague and chartered accountant, Amee Desai, to turn these observations into a technology solution and founded GormalOne. Their first attempt failed. Asking farmers to input daily data into an app proved unrealistic. “We learned what not to do,” Jain later said. That failure shaped the next iteration. Instead of relying on farmers alone, the team built a system that captured data through the wider dairy ecosystem: 1. vets, 2. technicians, 3. service providers, thereby reducing friction for farmers. To explain this, Manish used a simple analogy: “You go to a doctor when you’re sick. If you don’t get well, the next doctor has no idea what the first one did. The third repeats the same tests. We wanted to avoid that for cattle.” The result was NITARA, a platform designed around real behaviour on the ground, built to meet farmers where they are.
