@guardiannews Worcester College at Oxford was still holding mock slave auctions as recently as 2016. Visit our profile to find out more about this institutionally racist act and just how prevalent it is in the UK - particularly in independent schools.

So @BorisJohnson says he won’t take a knee for #BLM because he ‘doesn’t believe in gestures’.
That’s fine. Because he and @michaelgove are clearly capable of showing their humanity and empathy in far more...imaginative ways...

@NoSlaveAuctions Hi there, this type of activity is not appropriate, or acceptable, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Please do send us a direct message us to discuss the information you have so we can take action.

Comic Relief @comicrelief will you help to dismantle racism by banning funds being raised for your cause through mock slave auctions? We have a folder full of evidence we can share with you to demonstrate many such events that are taking place in your name.

@NoSlaveAuctions No. It was inappropriate & deeply offensive then & now. The event was not an official Marie Curie event, our staff were not involved with organising or promoting it. We do not condone anyone raising money in a manner such as this that is so deeply hurtful to so many people.

@NoSlaveAuctions @santanderuk @santanderukhelp We deeply regret being aligned with this third party activity & apologise for any offence caused. We’ve had an ethical statement in place for a number of years & will now not accept any donations that we believe to have been raised through morally unacceptable activities, (1/2)

Just a couple of the many examples we found of mock slave auctions being held in benefit of @BBCCiN Children In Need. These are by @BandQ B&Q, @SpeysideHighSch and @Perins and @DalzielHigh

@Nadine_Writes @NMCF What’s been striking is how particularly prevalent the tradition of holding mock slave auctions is in independent grammar and boarding schools. Box Hill school in Surrey charge up to £35k a year.
English

@journoramzy @HuffPostUK @Nadine_Writes Comic Relief clearly want to distance themselves from this, but the @FundrRegulator code of practice makes returning/rejecting donations complex. @comicrelief we’ll contact you next week with the many further examples of comic relief slave auctions. What is needed is policy change

So... charities and schools have been recommending and performing mock 'slave auctions' as a fundraising method. When Comic Relief discovered cash had been raised in this way, it gave it back. @HuffPostUK exclusive on @NoSlaveAuctions by @Nadine_Writes bit.ly/2NaHe8j

@Nadine_Writes @HuffPostUK Great article. Thank you so much Nadine for all your efforts on this. We look forward to continue working with you. X

m.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/mock-sla… Mock Slave Auctions must end. A big thank you to @Nadine_Writes and @HuffPost for following our campaign and raising awareness of this offensive and racist practice.

A ‘Slave Auction’ is apparently an entirely appropriate fundraising activity according to @MDS_UK’s website. This charity is part of @KingsCollegeLon who made this statement just a few weeks ago: twitter.com/kingscollegelo…

King's College London@KingsCollegeLon
The past week has been a very challenging time for anyone who cares about equality and justice. At King’s, we deplore all forms of racism. We also know that we have to look hard at our own behaviours and structures, challenging ourselves as well as others. (1/4)

@NoSlaveAuctions @comicrelief We are horrified that this terminology was used by a member of staff who no longer works for us when setting up the "Just Giving" page. We wholeheartedly condemn anything that is, or could be construed as, racism in any way and we fully support blacklivesmatter. #comicrelief
