I only buy dog shit stocks. I buy the small caps nobody wants. I buy the busted, ugly, declining, unfashionable companies trading at 3x earnings that no fund manager would be caught dead owning at a conference. I buy them because dog shit gets dog shit multiples, and dog shit multiples are where every real return in equity investing has ever come from, and the people who pretend otherwise are selling a story, not a strategy. I learned this when I was 14 years old, walking around my neighborhood with a plastic bag and a shovel, charging $5 a yard to clean dog shit out of people’s lawns. Nobody else wanted the job. The other kids were mowing lawns and washing cars and competing on price with each other for the glamorous work. I had the entire dog shit market to myself. By the end of the summer I had $2,400 in cash in a shoebox under my bed, which was more than any of the lawn-mowing kids had made, and the reason was not that I was smarter or worked harder. The reason was that I was willing to do the thing nobody else would do, in exchange for being paid the entire margin nobody else would compete for. That shoebox was the bankroll. That bankroll, compounded over the next 25 years through the same exact principle applied to public equities, is the entire reason I am writing this from a house I own outright while the lawn-mowing kids are still arguing on Twitter about whether to buy Costco at 35x earnings. Buy the dog shit. Get paid the dog shit margin. That is the whole job. It has been the whole job since 1934. It will be the whole job long after every compounder in your portfolio has been re-rated by 60% and the people who owned them are quietly telling their friends, at dinner parties they no longer enjoy, that they were right in spirit and just wrong in price.
