More writing does not make you a better writer - only reading does that. But writing can help thinking, problem solving and make you smarter. The method is not  ChatGPT …. It is revision.

What makes a Japanese woman with four degrees, including a PhD, an unlikely loser? Better Never Than Late is a hilarious one-woman show by Nobumi Kobayashi (@NobbyKLondon). Find out how hilariously bizarre her life is! 10, 17, 24 Aug at Haverstock Tavern camdenfringe.com/events/better-…

@mattvsjapan Translating between Japanese and English drives me insane. These languages are culturally totally alien to each other, and so much gets lost in translation. That said, I prefer Murakami in English , probably because his Japanese makes everything sound so in-Japanese.

The relationship between translation and language learning is funny The most common profession associated with language learning is translation Yet, many people learn a language because they want to get away from translation and understand their favorite media in the original

@mattvsjapan Takeshi Kotano was doing that back in the 80s too. No one thought twice about that back then, but now?

Was interesting to see that in the preliminaries of this year's M-1 Grand Prix, 2 out of the 10 groups did jokes directly related to old people/old age This will probably be a trend that becomes more and more prominent over time as Japan's population ages

@skrashen @ResearchGate Forced reading worked for me too. I had to read many English books, including 1984 by George Orwell, for the International Baccalaureate. Having to pass the exams worked for me. I now consider myself fully bilingual in English and Japanese, and reading is the no.1 reason.

@mattvsjapan I live in the U.K. and must say I miss Japanese pens! I still buy the uniball eye, paying extortionate prices! 🙄

I was on Japanese TV again a couple months ago! They were doing a special on Japanese stationery, and they wanted a foreigner to explain how much better Japanese pens are than Western pens 🤣

@mattvsjapan They are at work. Japanese people don’t chat away while on duty. I know they’re only getting paid a pittance, but they are still totally aware of being monitored through the CCTV, etc.

I love how the employee at the konbini never tries to start a conversation with me

@mattvsjapan I’m Japanese and I seriously believe very few people there have ‘ikigai’. I live elsewhere now, but don’t ask me if I have it- that way madness lies! 😆

@tokini_andy @JEverettLearned Written and spoken Japanese are two different things. So, if you want to learn written Japanese, that may be one way of approaching it. As a visual learner, it won’t work for me: it’ll be a total waste of my time.

@LanguageVlogs @mattvsjapan I don’t think you should try to learn languages without context. If you’re only using it to prepare for language proficiency tests, that’s another story. Passing them doesn’t necessarily mean you are fluent, but you can put it down on your CV.

@mattvsjapan But it’s not just for English. I understand that Duolingo is far from perfect, but what resource really is? Not everyone is an avdid language learner, and when you are it’s easy to lose perspective. If it’s a way to motivate to to learn what the harm?

Duolingo has (unfortunately, imo) reached Japan..... I get that Duolingo can help when you're first starting a new language, but every Japanese person has already taken at least 6 years of English classes This is seriously the last thing they need lol

@mattvsjapan Say No to Duolingo! Why do you have to use it if you can read authentic texts?!
