Some families on universal credit are getting the equivalent take home pay of a £71k salary for doing the square root of fuck all Do you really think I’m going to be angry at pensioners getting a pension that’s less than most of Europe - that they have earned No - no im not They aren’t the problem

@thewealthster @sophielouisecc That’s not the win you think it is. 1 - define ‘loaded’. 2 - take the State Pension off people, their income drops. Some drop from the 40% tax bracket, to the 20% bracket. Others just pay less tax too. Nation loses out 3 - pensioners have less to spend. National loses out.

@sophielouisecc We need to cut state pensions. Means test them. Most pensioners are loaded either through property or other pensions.

@BenedictSpence ‘money they haven’t earned’? We may as well save all £334bn of the benefits bill! Idiot.

It’s funny seeing pensioners raging about the “politics of envy” when they’re getting upset that money they haven’t earned might go to, say, children instead of them.

@BenRamanauskas Increase the SPA to 70? NHS employees have to go to SPA to get full occ pension, otherwise it’s nearly 4% a year reduction. You want nurses and cleaners to work to 70 now? Will you work to 70?

Means test the State Pension. Freeze it for three years. Increase the SPA to 70. Abolish the Triple Lock.

@shivmalik Dear Shiv, complain to the house builders. Supply is driven by them and their shareholders. If they build too many, they drive down prices, which front benefit their model. Oversupply kills them, under supply keeps them in business. Boomers’ are not the problem.

Dear boomers, can you afford to buy the house you live in currently with the wage you used to earn before you retired? If you can’t, then that’s the whole housing problem in a nutshell. It really is that simple to understand.

@linmeitalks If we abolished the State Pension tomorrow, explain how it benefits you directly? The Govt isn’t going to stop taking NI off you, and help you. They’ll just waste the money and you’ll be no better off. The outcome of this argument won’t improve your life.

Can I ask why, if a pensioner has worked all their life, they only have the state pension to rely on? Didn’t decide to save ? Put away for a rainy day ? Sounds like poor planning to me. And yes if your children have flown the nest and you, or you and your spouse are knocking around in a 3 or 4 bedroom house you bought decades ago- SELL it. You’ll have more than enough to live on.

For the retired people in the comments claiming "I paid more than my fair share". Actually, most of you didn't. You're being subsidised by me, my peers, and the children we won't be able to have.

PSA: Pensioner Spending is the single largest line item here - *£160bn*. More than half of all benefit spending. More than NHS England, or all NHS Providers. Want to pay less tax? Reduce the benefits we give to people who’ve had an entire life to prepare and save.

@SimonHeighton @angloid0 All the people claiming the state pension is unaffordable are the same shitwits claiming the young will never be able to buy a house nor save enough for retirement. They also, bizarrely, think Universal Basic Income is a good idea, like that money floats down out of the sky. 🙄

89% of those aged 66 and over own a property, and the overwhelming majority own outright with no mortgage. 1.7% of those aged 25-34 own their property outright. More than four in ten (42%) British adults under 40 who don't currently own a home have effectively given up on ever owning property — even among those earning over £60,000 a year, 38% say they can't see themselves affording a home in the next decade.

@barkmutterworth @higgyboson @KirstieMAllsopp @DevonCC At our local tip (Somerset) I was stopped in my Defender hard top, told it was classed as a van & needed a permit. Was kitted out as a camper, so I opened the back door & unloaded. To be fair, the councils made the rules complicated, the guys were only trying to interpret them.

This piece fails to ask “why are folk more inclined pay criminals to take away their waste?” The answer is governments have over taxed waste and over regulated what can go in a skip, entirely blind to what the consequences might be. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
