@RaiseTheTrident @MarinerMuse Really curious how the Red Sox utilized him as opposed to the M’s. Was it similar? I imagine the way they’re deploying him is awful for him to attempt to regain any rhythm at the plate. Pinch hitting is never an optimal environment for batters, especially when they’re scuffling
English

Many #Mariners fans, myself included, are frustrated with how the OF/DH platoons have been going for the club. This morning, I decided to whip up some visual aids for the topic.
The big picture problem is simple, Rob Refsnyder has been a worse bat against LHP this year than either Canzone or Raley have been in their career totals, which has made a complete LHP black hole in the lineup. This has also caused other teams to put in lefties ASAP to take Raley and Canzone out of the equation for later innings.
The smaller and more interesting conversation is WHY Rob Refsnyder is struggling so much this season. The process in acquiring Refsnyder was pretty sound, as can be seen in the second graphic.
The other questions that arise from this: when is enough, and what is the solution?

@TheeNelDog @accelball @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish Told me today they lost because of Bazardo and then blocked me 😂 not because they only scored 2 runs in the last 18 innings or anything
English

@NolanHowes @accelball @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish Luis pitched 4 innings, not 3. This guy can’t even get his facts straight. He’s an absolute moron.
English

Luis Castillo, whose spot in the starting rotation is tenuous at best, allowed four runs while forcing the Mariners to play from behind almost immediately Saturday in a 6-1 loss to the White Sox.
From @RyanDivish: seattletimes.com/sports/mariner…
English

@accelball @TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish If you’re calling last year disastrous this must be your first time rooting for this team. You would have never survived the 2010s. Luis could have gone 9 IP and given up 2 runs yesterday and they still would’ve lost. They also only have scored once today. Whose fault?
English

@NolanHowes @TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish Castillo hasn’t been “struggling” he’s been disastrous for two seasons straight. Unless you forget he cost us a trip to the WS last year
English

@accelball @TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish Not at all supporting Castillo’s performance, he’s been bad. But this fanbase has been spoiled with great pitching over the years and unfortunately sometimes fingers need to be pointed at the offense when they fail over and over again to pick up their pitchers when they struggle
English

@accelball @TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish You’re saying with a straight face that the Mariners had no chance to win a game against the Chicago White Sox because the starter gave up 4 runs. And the blame goes to the pitcher. Not the offense’s issue at all?
English

@NolanHowes @TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish It wasn’t a four run deficit. It was four runs in 3 innings knowing you would either have Castillo continue to pitch or have to go to the thin bullpen early. There was no real shot at that point.
English

@accelball @TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish Castillo hasn’t been great but labeling the odds of overcoming a 4 run deficit “no chance” is more of an indictment on the offense considering you can drive in 4 runs with one swing
English

@TheeNelDog @SeaTimesSports @RyanDivish He did by giving up 4 runs in 3 innings and giving us no chance from the beginning
English

@MarinerMuse Alright let’s back up. If Colt comes up and struggles, yet they’ve made the decision to uproot JP from SS in his final year, they’ve introduced unnecessary drama into the clubhouse whereas they’d be better off ensuring Colt could hold his own at the MLB level before giving him SS
English

@vmaughan3 Do you know what a percentile is? By definition someone has to fall into that 1st percentile. Him having that 1% doesn’t inherently insinuate everyone else gets to that ball routinely. Not saying that exonerates him from making it that difficult. Just saying it’s not “routine”
English

@NolanHowes I think you’re grossly understating how limited of range we’re talking here. Literally 1%
English

Just so we are clear. An average big league SS gets around that ball and fields it routinely for an out. JP was dead last in range for MLB SS last year and should not be playing the position in the big leagues. Diving for a ball you should be fielding routinely is not a good play
Daniel Kramer@DKramer_
It won’t go for an out, but hell of an effort from J.P. Crawford going all-glove on this one -- and Cole Young, too, who was ready for the alley-oop.
English

@vmaughan3 Sure, I am not arguing that. But would love to see an average SS “getting around that ball and fielding it routinely” with someone with Laureano’s speed running
English

@NolanHowes Maybe. But I would wager JP and his -13 OAA dead last in all of baseball range played a SIGNIFICANT part in him sliding for that.

English

@RyanDivish If it’s any consolation to Luke, if he made it to 2nd I am sure the M’s would’ve considered having JP bunt instead of swing away. And of course nobody on the team is capable of laying one down, so he’d still have been on 2nd with 1 out anyways
English

Raley on the play ...
“I was just gonna keep going, but it hit me as I was going, like, ‘what if anyone saw it,” he said. ‘I know playing first base last year, I was always looking for that. I was just trying to make too tight of a turn. I knew I had to go and try to get in scoring position. But realization hit me, if someone saw it, it would be better for me being on first base than not on base at all. Just a stupid mistake.”
And later ...
“That shouldn’t have been the situation,” he said. “If I hit first base, I believe I get to second relatively easily, and J.P.’s ball probably scores me, and if it doesn’t, I’m on third base with Dom and Cole coming and both of their balls are deep enough for a sac fly. It’s unfortunate. I don’t even know what to say. It just can’t happen.”

@eriks_coasters @AaronGleeman That’s not something I’ve ever noticed to be true while watching MLB
English

@NolanHowes @AaronGleeman I believe it goes the other way, too, though, where the zone contracts on an 0-2 count
English

I feel like the 3-0 count "gimme" strikes for pitchers are going to be eradicated with the ABS challenge system.
It's a clear area where umpires have always expanded the zone.

Josh Bell challenged a 3-0 pitch called a strike, wins, and draws a walk. Two on, no outs for #MNTwins in T4.
English

@MarinerMuse You will watch the Naylor/Garver 1B platoon and you will like it!
English

I fear I’m being asked to sign up for Mitch Garver, backup catcher without reading the fine print
Seattle Mariners@Mariners
One more before the real thing at @TMobilePark on Thursday. #TridentsUp
English

@NolanHowes I believe May 1 is probably the money date
That’s the first in-season opt out he has
English

Official Statement: If Cal asked for Mitch Garver to come back, what Cal says goes
Seattle Times Sports@SeaTimesSports
Back home in Colorado, Mitch Garver worked out and waited for a phone call that never came. Until Cal Raleigh reached out this week with a suggestion. From @A_Jude: st.news/3Oo32jC
English

@RyanDivish Professionalism always wins out, both of them are gonna be huge contributors this year. Love them putting it to bed early
English

A statement from Randy Arozarena:
"I understand that with Opening Day a few days away, I don’t want it to be a distraction. Cal and I have talked and I apologized for what I said after the game. Nothing in the WBC takes away from the fact that we are brothers and teammates. He’s family, and we are both focused on helping the Mariners win the World Series."
English

@bsblnut6626 @NikoTamurian “Moved” is quite the PG way to describe that incident
English

@NikoTamurian The Sonics moved to Oklahoma and won. The Mariners will probably move to Provo Utah - why? clean streets, no ravenous thieves in the legislature. The Seahawks probably to Ogden Utah.
