@panic I’m really liking all the updates in Nova 10. 2 things, though: 1. I miss seeing where git changes are in the scroll bar. It used to show that in addition to bracket start/end. 2. [bug] the minimap is blank when first turning it on until you edit a file.

@dfreelon Pretty much any instance that isn’t setting out to be a cesspool interoperates with the rest of the fediverse. Choosing which server to sign up for is the hardest thing. Once you do that it mostly feels normal. People can get used to @username@doman; they’re fine with email

@anatudor Larger instances are under heavy load right now, which I’m sure is delaying sending these emails. It should calm down soon as infra for those instances scale up

So I looked into logging into Mastodon again. Password I remembered did not seem to work, so I went for password recovery. The email with the link just wouldn't arrive. When I eventually saw it in my inbox and clicked it, this happened. Tried a few times more, same thing. Meh.

@whatisnuclear I’m actually not too worried about Aranet in particular, though there are also some projects on github that I’m planning to try out that lets you get data from the Aranet4 without using their app. Mostly just observing/realizing how information-rich CO₂ concentration can be.

I’ve had an Aranet4 CO₂ sensor for 24 hours, and it’s already terrifyingly clear that there are privacy implications. Feels like ML could infer so many things: room occupancy, door and window open/closed, I think even whether my nextdoor neighbor (apartment building) is home.

@spurpura That’s really cool! I wouldn’t have guessed before yesterday, but it now makes total sense that you can use CO₂ as part of a proxy variable. Too bad normal people can’t do something really private like that.

@Noleli 2 of 2: You really do want the smart house to be able to plan for fresh, filtered air (especially if you are surrounded by wildfire smoke) but you don't want the system to leak the information to AMZN or hackers. So, I used differential privacy to store the inferences and actions

Perhaps I shouldn’t be so surprised since my understanding is that KN95 is harder to breathe _through_ but is more forgiving of leaks around, whereas N95 is easier to breathe through but has less tolerance for the seal.

Got a nebulizer in the mail today and ran this procedure. Both N95 (3M Aura 9205+) KN95 (Powecom, earloops) failed. This was not surprising because of my beard. What was surprising was that the N95 failed worse than the KN95. I’ll try again with a much shorter beard soon-ish.
