A few people have asked why we describe the requirement for people to be "educated to degree level" as discrimination. In this post we've tried to set out why we believe it fulfils the legal criteria for Indirect Discrimination under Equality Act 2010 nongraduateswelcome.co.uk/articles/is-it…

Just got a notification that today is @NonGradsWelcome's 5th twitterversary. Seems apt given all the current discussions about degrees and the purpose of universities.

@Goals4girlsuk Looks like a great job...but why is a degree an essential for this role? What will a graduate bring that nobody else could possibly offer?

Social mobility orgs and those trying to help those from underrepresented backgrounds go to uni have been some of the worst offenders at including unnecessary degree requirements in job descriptions. But not @FFaspirations. This is brilliant. Other orgs take note!

This is everything that's wrong with agency recruiting. If a candidate: 1) is willing to work 5 days on-site 2) has agency experience 3) has in-house experience and 4) has experience working VC/PE-backed...but doesn't come from a "top-tier school" (whatever the tf that is) they won't be considered? This is what happens when companies work with recruiters who are order takers and not partners in the hiring process.

If you're looking for a New Year's Resolution that's worth keeping, this is a great place to start. Will 2024 be the year we see the end of discriminatory degree requirements?

So far @HeritageFundUK have chosen to ignore our request to clarify what experience is equivalent to a masters degree. It makes you wonder - if they can't define it, how are they going to assess it in a fair, equitable manner?

@fair_jobs @NonGradsWelcome Hello @fair_jobs thanks for sharing your feature with us. Our Directors do not have to be educated to masters level we also accept relevant experience.

@HeritageFundUK @fair_jobs Please can you clarify for us exactly how much experience is equivalent to a masters degree? Please can you also tell us specifically how this "equivalent experience" is different to the experience already listed in the rest of the job ad.

Hiya, what's your policy on requiring post grad level education for roles? Must all directors have a masters? How does this work in conjunction with your commitment to inclusion? We've written about this here: fairmuseumjobs.org/2023/01/26/qua… @NonGradsWelcome

The point at which orgs like @HarrisPreston realise they can't answer these questions should be the point they realise the requirement is flawed and should be removed. It says a lot about them (and their claimed commitment to EDI) that they choose to carry on regardless
#NonGraduatesWelcome@NonGradsWelcome

@HarrisPreston @fair_jobs Hi @HarrisPreston - please can you clarify for us exactly how much experience is equivalent to a degree? Please can you also suggest how someone who has not done a degree course is supposed to know if their experience is equivalent?

Organisations (& teams) that only include graduates -especially if they're exclusively from 'prestigious' institutions- are more likely to be blindsided by developments arising from wider society (Surprised by the Brexit vote, anyone?) #DiversityAndInclusion cc @NonGradsWelcome

Members of the highly educated class tend to be the most insular, measured by how often people have contact with those who have jobs unlike their own. III Research Programme Leader @MikeSav47032563 was quoted in @nytimes ⬇️ ow.ly/A1q150PsOYE

@DavidBurgessFR It’s just so much easier to scrap the degree requirements than it is to justify having them. As an employer, it’s also loads easier to look at experience than to try and work out how much more relevant a degree is 🙄
