The horse derby comparison shows how we don’t have the language to productively discuss crypto protocols. L1, L2, etc. are meaningless jargons used by different people to mean different things. Reframe the conversation in terms of what users care about: apps, security, and risk.

More progress on the policy front. What does custody mean? > unilateral and independent ability to exercise control over the funds without requiring approval or consent of any third party But control over private keys is only one part of custody. From a risk point of view, control over what is being signed is *just* as important as control over the private key itself. Consider any self custodial wallet. Metamask, Phantom, Backpack, etc. (if I'm going to FUD anyone I might as well FUD myself). Putting aside the fact that it is trivial for them to steal software private keys from users (remember Slope?)--wallets can simply just change the code to trick the user into sending funds to an attacker. This applies to not only wallets but to all UI frontends. The risk is very much there. Part of the stack--the smart contract--is decentralized, but the most important part--the frontend--is centralized. This applies to the large majority of crypto applications, today. The solution: verifiable front end code execution. We should be verifying all decentralized apps at the OS level like how mobile apps do and those apps should map to verifiable source code that anyone can audit. If you can't verify the code and you can't map it to source, the author + publisher has custody for all intents and purposes--even though it doesn't control the private key. The most recent example of this: Gnosis Safe + Bybit. That wasn't just a centralized exchange problem. That was also a decentralized app problem. Every decentralized app is simply one NPM supply chain attack away from getting pwned. As the current meta runs its course, as crypto continues to grow, and as mania turns into sobriety, the importance of this will continue to grow with each boom, each bust, and each market cycle. We must prepare.
