Beltane or Bealtaine was a Celtic/Gaelic festival held on the 1st May to mark the beginning of summer. One of the key parts of the festival (alongside massive bonfires, feasting & making merry with beer 👀) was the exchange of posies to bring good luck. Here's a Beltane posy for you from my garden, including cow parsley, red campion, borage & forget me not (I made the jug in pottery class)🌿

#OnThisDay 1949 At midnight twenty-six counties of Ireland officially left the British Commonwealth and became a republic on the 18th. Crowds packed on to O'Connell Street bridge to see a 21 gun salute. It was 3 minutes late due to the massive crowds. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1888 Grace Gifford was born in Rathmines, Dublin. Gifford was a cartoonist & artist as well as an Irish Nationalist&Sinn Fein Executive member. She used her art to promote Sinn Fein policy. She was Anti-Treaty&spent time in jail during the Civil War. #Ireland #History

Born #Onthisday 1893 Kathleen Balfe-founder member of Cumann na mBan in Drogheda & in 1967 the 1st woman member of the Drogheda corporation. During the #IrishWarofIndependence she delivered intelligence & hid a machine gun under her coat for an attack on the RIC barracks in Ardee

Died #Onthisday 2011 in #Dublin obstetrician Dr Lily Troy. During #WW2, she served in the RAF as medical officer. Later she became Asst Master at the Coombe the 1st woman to hold such a post in Ireland & was appt'd a consultant in 1956 (apparently Ireland's 1st female consultant)
