In the course of responding to @lilmoemusic's characterization of global IQs, I went to ViewOnIQ.org and downloaded David Becker's database of global IQs (AFAIK, still considered the most rigorous of the attempts to do so) and grouped the 149 countries into regions. Here are the results. Note that "Anglosphere" includes the UK, Canada, Ireland, USA, Australia, and New Zealand. The means are not weighted by population. BTW, the website has an extremely detailed discussion of methodological issues.

The Texas Rangers installed a deeply controversial statue in their ballpark concourse this spring. And they aren't willing to provide answers as to why it's there. Yikes. Important work from @SamBlum3: nytimes.com/athletic/71975…

NEWS: Huge first win for Mayor Mamdani’s tax-the-rich plans in NYC. Mamdani just secured a deal with Gov. Hochul to create the state’s first-ever tax on $5 million+ second homes owned by ultrawealthy out-of-state residents. Hochul hopes to raise $500 million annually that would be used to address the city’s deficit.

There’s personal property like the one home that most people have. That obviously shouldn’t be taxed more. Then there’s the people that use their wealth to command millions to work towards their ends. That’s private property. Wealthy people’s businesses use more public resources than some small towns. They have to pay more because they’re using and degrading public infrastructure more.

@PittsburgWizard @MeidasTouch the whole government seizing private property / labor doesn't sit well with may people. Just because someone is affluent, does not give the government unlimited access to seize their private property.

@MeidasTouch It’s so weird people are against soaking the rich. Their fall from monopoly power and kneecapping the constantly ballooning wealth is your benefit. Even if they were taxed so much they only took in 150,000 a year and had to sell their many homes you’d benefit.

It might be deviant Congressional Democrats in the headlines today. But it's no time to gloat. It's all depressing. Republicans are just as bad. I know a lot of people who are active in politics and have their thumb on the scale. And I occasionally try to be impactful where I can. But it's all depressing. If the smartest and richest person on the planet concludes that he can't move the needle and that it is a waste of his time (private sector opportunity cost), then, really, what's the point of caring anymore? Most of them are corrupt, incompetent scumbags. And we're the suckers for thinking anything we do will make a difference. It's all theatre - a distraction from real life and the ability to actually impact change, in your life or locally in your community.

@SirWirtz @OrenKessler This a question of capability, not one of will. If Hamas had the capability, it would exterminate the whole Jewish population of Israel. And probably most of its Arab population too.

1) Pod Save America gives Hasan Piker softball opportunity to say he can't actually *mean* it when he says Hamas is "1,000x better" than Israel 2) Piker declines opportunity: "I mean it" 3) Headline of Ezra Klein's NYT op-ed, "Hasan Piker Is Not the Enemy," mysteriously changes

I am suspending my campaign for Governor. To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.

The Libary of Congress should "lock in," on a scheduled basis, inviolable benchmark collections of classic & significant works. The point is to establish cultural baselines so that retroactive editing can't disfigure, misrepresent, or ideologically warp our cultural history.

Not necessarily, but it could. It depends on the context. I guess instead of highlighting left wing, contrived social justice it could be about nature. Our patriarchal society of only men leading in public and warmongering isn't natural. Religious dogma tries to force it and say it's natural for women to be receptive/submissive and never lead but that's not what happens in the animal world. Women are the superior, civilizing species and men are falling behind, so we are out of line with nature in human society.

Sci-fi writer Andy Weir slams gender ideologues who wanted to push him on his main character in his book Artemis: "However there is a minority of people who view everything through a lens of social issues. And they're more focused on Jazz's gender then they are in any other part of the story. Many consider it wrong of me not to focus on social issues in the book - as if simply having a female lead means I had some responsibility to make it about her gender. That's not how I write, so I don't think there was anything I could do for people who want that kind of story." Does having a female character mean a work to be some sort of commentary on gender?

@NostrandVandr @SwipaCam also he was never clearly the second best, it was 1a, 1b. Embiid just could never play enough

@NostrandVandr @SwipaCam And that’s where you’re wrong, embiid was a top 3 rim protector before these last 2 seasons while also being clearly the most dominant center since shaq. Individual offense is more important than defense and the offensive gap was bigger than the defensive gap

sure, it just makes the minutes disparity even more glaring. Embiid finished 1,2,1 in MPV voting, and was clearly the second best big in the game. Same goes for Robinson. Embiid was a better pure scorer, but had nowhere near the defensive impact that Robinson had and wasn't half as durable.

@NostrandVandr @SwipaCam Obviously I was talking about excluding the season where he played 19 games and this season where he is constantly in and out the lineup. The 39 games season he played most of the available game before season ending injury. Why not include a season where he was at his very best
