@ConfedMatthew reflects on his visit to University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Trust (@UHDBTrust), and some of the ways the trust is managing the challenges it faces.
While more support is absolutely needed, the group has made a lot of progress since my last visit two years ago, and I am convinced that the leadership of Andrew and Richard and their wider board puts them in a strong position to deal with these challenges.
Balancing the need to improve urgent and emergency care alongside while continuing to deliver planned care will not be easy. It's a test case for effective system working, but likely to come down to whether the leftward shift is being adequately resourced. At the moment it isn't.
With no other drop-in services available in Leicester, it is certain that developing solutions with primary and community partners will be key. We are keen to share learning and insights on how this might be done from what we are seeing at a national level.
