10 THINGS TO EXPECT IN THE NBA TONIGHT: May 11th - R2, Game 4s 1) Pistons up 2-1, with The Cavaliers only able to win at home this entire postseason; They remain at Rocket Arena today. The Pistons notorious isolation defense is seemingly going to change more as we head into Game 4 to being more trap heavy, with these quotes from Piston's coach JB Bickerstaff: "They started to attack switches more, and then their guys went to more of their iso game. So again, we got to do a better job being in position to help one another. I thought our floor got a little more space than we normally are, and guys had opportunity to drive the ball and get to the paint and make plays from there... ...we just got to shrink the floor more. We were just a little hugged up to our man too much because of their ability to shoot. We just didn't do a better job of being in tighter, and then when the ball moves, we can fly and close out to our guy." 2) There are positive takeaways from both groups here, as even though Cleveland secured the victory, Detroit rallied from a 17 point deficit to taking the lead, all in the same 3rd quarter. They had success here by forcing The Cavs to outside shooting, while previously Donovan Mitchell had 12 FGA in the paint, while in that 2H generated all 15 of his points inside the arc. That needs to change. 3) To promote Spot Up shooting, Max Strus could take the starting spot over Wade after closing both halves. "Yeah, [Max is] a maniac competitor. It's kind of like a playoff cliche in the NBA — you need guys that are a little crazy in a good way in the playoffs because they'll — you needed some wildness tonight, and he provides that. And of course the shooting and the spacing. But without that, I don't think we get this win tonight without his energy and his spontaneity." - Atkinson In a slightly contradictory manner, Atkinson also noted that the two bigs of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen have to be rewarded more. Specifically, they "aren't rewarding those guys enough. We got to shift it from being — I want the open threes, no doubt, but there's probably five [deep seals] tonight where you're like, man, get to the rim or throw it to our big guys. So we have to shift our offensive mentality a little bit going forward in this series." This seems like something that would be intentionally present early in the game. With Detroit looking to close gaps on Mitchell, Allen and Mobley can still get independent paint looks. All about a balance. 4) Cade Cunningham is going to keep facing relentless pressure, and Atkinson continues to hammer that point home, "Cade's a great player, and we got to keep making him work. He's the head of the snake. We got to keep trying to make it difficult on him. Keep showing him a crowd. Heck of a player, but we got to be even better against him, especially end of game." Cade got up 27 FGA last game alongside his triple-double, though 5 of those were on putback attempts. He was still able to generate iso looks in the upper level so long as he didn't call a PnR set, though new Atkinson quotes may start bringing two regardless. 5) This all sounds fine and dandy for Tobias Harris, who has covered his points line in every single game of the postseason, yet last two games have required an efficient road to get there -- especially from deep. Matching up with Mobley on both ends is challenging while Tyson has been able to carve good minutes (albeit not enough) for relief. Of his 14 FGA last game, he had 3 in low clock scenarios. He produced just 1 single look inside the arc in the 4th quarter. 6) Lakers have one last chance here to avoid being swept, but haven't kept a single game within 15 points so far this series. Jalen Williams and Luka Doncic both remain out here. This is Williams' 6th consecutive game missed due to their hamstring issue, and while OKC has a solid cushion, it would haven been ideal to have him get some reps ahead of the Western Conference Finals. 7) The Lakers were up 2 at end of the 1H before losing the 2nd by 25 points. Austin Reaves generated 8 assists in that opening half, with that excellent production starting from his drives. Hachimura and Kennard were a combined 7-8 from deep this half, yet this 3PT production needs to remain strong to back Reaves' passing again as the paint gets way too congested for Ayton dump offs. 8) What I like most from Lakers offense is the LeBron interior sets, which put them in an option of solo Post Up or finding cutters when doubled. The scoring side of that option has been a problem, with Bron shooting 3-14 on his top 5 Post Up defenders last game of Dort/Caruso/Wallace/Chet/IHart. He needs these sets to land to keep Lakers offense multidimensional. 9) Deandre Ayton ended Game 3 with just a single defensive rebound, which also left him being pulled early in the 3Q. He played just 8 minutes in the 2H total, notching zero defensive rebounds. I did like the minutes we got from Adou Thiero, who snagged 8 rebounds in 13 minutes. “I mean, just thinking about it, I prayed for moments like these and worked for moments like these, so just to get that opportunity has been special and go out there and do what I can for the guys” - Thiero Ayton has 9+ Reb in just 4/29 games with 26 or fewer minutes this season. This is 0/14 with Reaves/Rui/Bron active. 10) Ajay Mitchell is so good man, filling in as a starter for Williams this entire series. He notched 18 Pts, 7 Ast, 4 Reb and 3 Steals... in the 2nd half of Game 3. Both The Lakers reset and transition defense were incredibly slow, so Ajay's speed has been brutal. On the same note, SGA has produced just 21 PPG this series. While his man assignment was Marcus Smart paired with an LAL plan to sag off Dort and bring two, it was not only easy for OKC to switch but also for them to generate non-SGA sets. It is almost more advantageous to let SGA go solo, where he shot a series-high 20 FGA last game with just 1 being in that 4th Q (blowout). "... in the first two games they were doubling [Shai] quite aggressively, and it's really put his teammates at advantage. And now tonight, you turn around and we get contributions from everybody." - Daigneault

10 THINGS TO EXPECT in THE NBA TODAY: April 17th - Play-Ins, Battle for 8th Seed HORNETS v MAGIC WARRIORS v SUNS 1) The Magic are in pretty poor form, and that showed in their 8/9 game vs PHI, with only Desmond Bane crossing the 20 Pts mark for an offense that generated just 97 points total. Now, they face a CHA defense that is elite at rim protection, sitting Top 5 in OPP Rim FGM (L10) and vs PnR Roll Men. Granted, this rim protection is at risk if Moussa Diabate can't suit up, who is currently questionable with hip soreness. 2) Last meeting, The Hornets hid away LaMelo Ball on Tristan Da Silva; Issue now is that Franz Wagner has returned, in whatever state of health that is, so LaMelo will instead have to defend a slightly higher usage guy in Jalen Suggs. With 30+ mins and everyone in, Suggs has scored 14+ Pts in 6/8 this season, averaging 18.3 pts per 35 mins. 3) The Orlando Magic defense ended this season 2nd in isolation frequency, while allowing the most Pts to Isolation overall. In tandem, they are B5 in Pullup 3PA allowed post All-Star Break. Recently, The Hornets have been trigger happy, shooting 56 threes last game vs Miami. Deep shooting = longer rebounds. Desmond Bane has 4+ Reb in all four games vs Charlotte this season, all of which were played with 33 or fewer minutes, he notched 40 last game. Post ASB, CHA is allowing the 3rd fewest rebounds, yet off-ball guards have generated fine results. 4) With Goga coming off bench, CHA can play a bit more Kalkbrenner than we saw vs Miami if they wished. Grant Williams shot just 2/8 vs Miami, and ORL is a completely different defense in regards to Catch-and-Shoot allowed, so may be a "play it by feel" thing. Other bench quotes from Coach Lee: "Coby is an outlet back there, huge having him in the backcourt and he's been huge since he got here" 5) These two teams have met four times, and no matter what personnel these two have brought out, each game has ended with a final score of 11 or fewer points. Rather, both games featuring the Curry/Brooks duel ended within 5 points. However, this year Curry was most defended by... Collin Gillespie?! The purpose of this was to have Dillon Brooks on Draymond Green, which in turn gets him involved whenever GSW runs their popular two-man game of Curry/Green. With Collin now out of the starting lineup, PHX could go with their best defender of Goodwin on Curry, or with Jalen Green. 6) Phoenix's scheme left Draymond producing just 3 Ast in his one full meeting vs Brooks, off just 8 potentials. Post ASB, PHX sits dead average in OPP RPG & APG, yet Top 10 in DRTG. Brandin Podziemski just logged 41 minutes in the first Play-In game for GSW, and would love to see Melton carve into some of those minutes. Warriors are going to need as much spacing as possible here to punish any addition pressure on Curry. The Warriors already lead the league in 3PA/gp this season with 44.1 per game, yet shot 47/gp vs Phoenix this season. 7) Curry has generated 7, 16 and 16 RA in three meetings vs PHX this season, all of which were with Jimmy Butler & Green, and none of which were with Horford/Porzingis - which shouldn't be a big change. His two 16 RA games (31 & 23 Chances) both had a common denominator of Dillon Brooks being active for Phoenix. 8) Al Horford ended last game on fire, scoring 12 Pts off 4/4 3PT shooting and then closing the game overall. Horford in most scenarios here will be back under 20 minutes. This season with 17-21 minutes he is just 4/16 to o15.5 PRA, and 0/9 against non-B10 Center defenses. 9) The Phoenix offense is reliant on their big three of Booker/Green/Brooks, all of whom notched 37+ minutes in the Play-In game vs Portland. This team is coming off a tough matchup, given POR entered the postseason as the best defense in the league and ranked 1st vs Catch-and-Shoot. Warriors will provide more freedom here. PHX CnS guys like Brooks and O'Neale are good targets. 10) Draymond just put on a defensive masterclass against Kawhi Leonard, who ended the game with just 21 Pts in a full 40min of action. Likely to guard Dillon Brooks here sizing wise, though would assume overall that the Warriors elbow collapse we saw on Leonard will translate to Devin Booker. In tangent, Garland and Dunn notched 8 & 10 assists a pop. Phoenix's arsenal of shooters is more troublesome, so whatever pressure Booker faces will be much softer than Leonard.
