This is a very informative thread. We would all benefit from reading this entire message! Facts do matter. Thank you for providing this message! @NuclearHazelnut

So, @fox9: clear facts matter & in this case: • industrial oil leak • quickly isolated • no oil reached the Mississippi River • no radioactive release Context is important when reading headlines about nuclear facilities ⚛️☺️

@tonyannett Calling energy sources ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ instead of talking about reliability& physics is exactly the kind of discourse that keeps us from solving real problems…

I am convinced that the obsession with fossil fuels and nuclear by men in particular is that they are coded “masculine” whereas solar and wind are coded “feminine.” Get culture war bullshit out of technology!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️ Your beer contains K-40, which is naturally radioactive. A pint delivers about 0.01 µSv, roughly comparable to a few months of public dose near a nuclear plant. Sounds scary… but it’s completely harmless So, enjoy your green beer, don’t fear the radiation & sláinte! 🍻 Drink responsibly, radiation isn’t the risk.

@NuclearHazelnut @FOX9 We had a similar headline at Diablo Canyon: "Heavy Metals Detected in Plant Discharge" Turns out it was the runoff from the employee parking lot and the heavy metals were from the leaking oil from the employees' vehicles.

You may see headlines saying “200 gallons of oil leaked at the Monticello nuclear plant.” Let’s add some context because the headline is missing important details, @Fox9 Short thread 🧵

Somewhere above the clouds holding a replica uranium fuel pellet I use during talks. It helps people visualize how small nuclear fuel actually is… & how much energy it holds!! ⚛️ A real pellet about this size contains roughly the same energy as ~1 ton of coal

@NuclearHazelnut 3 months ago I had the chance to visit a nuclear power plant it was very informative, they had replica of fuel of various source to showcase the energy density. Nuclear was always beating anything else.

Ironically, this level of reporting is one of the reasons nuclear energy is among the most regulated & monitored industries on Earth. Even relatively small industrial leaks are publicly documented!!!! Just Google it!!!!

@gordonmcdowell That’s a great question!! Short answer: Not really. Actual fuel pellets are regulated nuclear material (enriched uranium), so they must be tracked, monitored, licensed & safeguarded. It’s not really a radiation issue but a regulatory& nuclear material control issue.

@NuclearHazelnut Is it possible to use a real fuel pellet for communication purposes? I mean, I assume it is not possible but exactly why not? (Aside from cost.) Not saying smart idea or anything like that. Just wondering if there is a hard rule/law.
