Most database performance problems do not begin with obviously slow queries. More often, they emerge gradually from repeated access patterns, unnecessary data retrieval, transaction contention, and uncontrolled concurrency as systems scale under load. dev.to/rahmannugar/ho…

@PrebsTamar you think you have more control over a business logic tightly coupled to your database? and you also believe that you're able to write more complex logic in your database than in languages that have been developed specifically for writing business logic?

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ Rest APIs? You ideally only use them for synchronous calls. Also with app code, your API handlers & async jobs can just call the same logic. But with stored procedures, everything now starts depending on DB-specific behavior. Do you see the issue now?

@NugarRahman @segun_os_ ORMs or raw sql queries within it. If another service wants to communicate with it, won't they communicate through rest apis? It's same thing with the database abstraction. The product service connects to the product database. Then the product service connects with the stored

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ I’m talking about how you test the business logic you’ve written. How do you test the backend applications you’ve built?

@NugarRahman @segun_os_ Are you talking about automated testing? Like CI/CD? or what do you mean? Maybe I'm getting you wrong

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ Again, a service can own its DB and expose REST APIs. That’s not the issue. The issue is saying complex business logic should mainly live in stored procedures. If the stored procedure owns the business rules, then mocking its output only tests the caller, not the actual logic.

@NugarRahman @segun_os_ You thinking to deep with regards this. With out database abstraction how do you communicate with services in situations where you need to implement some business logic? Simple, this particular service, connected to the database associated with it has the business logic either in

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ Operation base is not the same as scale is it? You’ve not proven how manually testing your application at this scale is better or even more accurate.

@NugarRahman @segun_os_ Bro, I literally worked in a company with this db abstraction systen and it's not a small start up boss. They operate in 4 African countries and in India. So you are saying they don't know what they are doing?

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ Flawed microservices take. Why are you only accounting for synchronous calls? If important business logic is enforced mainly in DB, how do async events respect those same rules without constantly calling that service, duplicating logic, or tightly coupling to one service’s DB?

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ Also, it’s fine to enforce referential integrity in your database but is it even ideal to ignore your app layer and spend so much DB resources on running complex business logic when you can just do it on the app layer and scale efficiently.

@PrebsTamar @segun_os_ So how do you test or mock these logic without having to mutate db state and let’s say you have several services depending on the same shared business logic, would you now be coupling all of them directly to database procedures instead of reusable application code?

@NugarRahman @segun_os_ 100 perent sure. When I worked as a database developer I saw things you could do with stored procedures i did not know where possible.

@segun_os_ More control of your data/business logic, easier to implement very complex business logic. Faster reads/writes because the db is optimised for that.
