Back in April 2015, @BPS_Julien and I started @BlackPugStudio. I didn't tell anyone the full plan. Honestly, it felt too big to say out loud. We were going to build the agency first, make it proper and reliable, then quietly pivot it into the game studio we'd dreamed about forever. Most people assumed the agency was the endgame. It wasn't. For nine years, client after client, web design, branding, and software builds. Late nights where we'd stare at screens until our eyes hurt, figuring it out as we went. Every project, every invoice, it all fed straight into this. Then May 2024 rolled around. We finally flipped the switch. For the financial year ending March 2025, we came out strong. Profitable, equity almost doubled. It wasn't always like that. There were stretches where I honestly didn't know if we'd scrape through. Bank balance low, deadlines piling up. But we did. And late last year, we received the final certificate for the Irish Digital Games Tax Credit for NumWorlds. Our first real commercial game! We were in that early batch of studios pushing through the process. Felt like we were helping carve the path. I’m real proud! I even ended up at Farmleigh House with the @Imirt_ie - The Irish Game Makers Association crew, sitting down with the DGTC folks. Shared what worked for us, what dragged, and how to make it smoother for whoever's next. Being there, with actual input on the system, was an honor, and it really stuck with me. The part I'm really proud of is that most indies I know burn savings or debt. I went a different route. The agency funds the projects and games. Full stop. No outside money, no strings. People warned me off it. "Keep 'em separate, too risky, don't blur the lines." I heard that line a dozen times. Didn't buy it, and looking back, it’s the best decision I ever ignored. Nearly eleven years of steady client cash, web, branding, dev work, gave us breathing room. A team I actually like working with, building something we give a damn about! It's the same quiet bootstrap @DoubleFine and @SupergiantGames walked (as far as I've heard). Takes longer than a quick seed round, feels brutal sometimes, but you come out owning every piece. THAT BEING SAID! Our firstborn @NumWorlds is live, and our SECOND GAME (PC/Console) is in development. And for the first time, we're not pretending we can do it all solo. Door's open for investment. Not because we're desperate. Just because the next chapter needs it. We really do! All's underway. And it feels... right!
