@DavidNautilus1 On a job exchange in Australia our son was put into a class one year below where he should have been, and essentially twiddled his thumbs for the year (though he benefited greatly from the cultural experience). He’s now a consultant surgeon.

Family A goes on holiday in term time to Spain. This family has 3 holidays per year. Both parents are together, with decent earnings, off-setting the cost of the fine. Both are able to pay within the time period. Family A can afford holidays outside of term time. Family B goes on holiday in term time to a caravan. These children have never had a holiday. Mum and Dad are not together. One estranged parent is not involved in the holiday and unexpectedly receives a fine. This family does not have any income other than benefits. Either or both parents are unable to pay the fine and so it quickly escalates. Family B cannot afford a holiday out of term time. This is my experience of this system. This is not a judgement of family A or B. A very difficult policy to uphold when you’re working hard to support the poorest families and communities. bbc.co.uk/news/education…

Doing some early years learning with a balance machine, toys, golf ball and poker chips. Poker chips are great for arranging, counting, stacking (and then knocking over if young enough). The red bus is heavier than the yellow taxi, and, 4 poker chips are heavier than a golf ball.

I’m giving my first talk soon in seven years, to some 40 champion maths teachers in East Dumbarton, and decided to call it ‘The Visual Language of Numeracy’.

I’ve decided to give my first numeracy talk in the seven years since retiring, to all 40+ champion maths teachers in East Dumbarton, in November. Meanwhile I recently visited a school in Windhoek to hand over a Numeracy Map and a Wee Red Box, and to share techniques with classes.

The app for the Numeracy Map was recently made free for all three levels. I’ve since realised in order to access levels 2 and 3 you need to delete your older version of the App and then download the new version. Numeracy, let’s get excellent.

The reason Brexit has failed is not down to the bad trade deal Boris Johnson struck with the EU (although it doesn't help). It is not down to a "Remainer parliament". It is not down to a "blob", invented or otherwise. Brexit has failed because it was always a bad idea.
