Severe storms are expected to affect the District today (3/16) and could bring damaging winds and possible tornadoes. Take time now to identify where you would shelter if a Tornado Warning is issued. The safest place is the lowest level of a building, in an interior room away from windows. Avoid large open rooms like cafeterias or auditoriums. If storms move through while you are commuting, be prepared to go inside a nearby building rather than staying in your vehicle. Stay weather aware this afternoon and evening and monitor alerts from AlertDC and the National Weather Service. Make sure emergency alerts are enabled on your cell phone. We're expecting severe storms today (3/16) in Washington, DC. What you need to know: 1. Tornado risk and damaging wind gusts of up to 80mph. 2. Heavy rain that could cause localized flooding. 3. Peak extreme weather 4-6PM. We will provide an update this afternoon.

Severe storms are forecasted to affect the District this afternoon and evening (3/16). There is potential for strong thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds, heavy rain, hail, and possible tornadoes. Secure outdoor items like trash cans and patio/balcony furniture before winds increase. Loose objects can become dangerous in severe weather. Learn more storm safety tips at ready.dc.gov.

🚨 The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch in the District of Columbia until 7PM today, 3/16. A Tornado Watch means that tornadoes are possible in the area. Very strong and dangerous winds may cause downed trees/branches, localized power outages, and damage to homes and buildings. BEFORE A TORNADO: - Secure loose outdoor objects like trash cans, outdoor furniture, and other items that could become dangerous flying debris during a tornado. - Charge your phone and other communication, medical, or assistive devices in case of a power outage. - Identify a safe space to shelter if a Tornado Warning is issued. DURING A TORNADO: - Go to the nearest sturdy building if you are outside or in a vehicle. - Move to an interior room on the lowest floor if possible. STAY AWAY from windows.

In addition to today's severe storm weather, DC will be under a Cold Alert from 7 PM today until 7 AM tomorrow, 3/17 due to low temperatures. Overnight, temperatures will feel like 22 degrees with wind chill. Find shelter and other assistance at cold.dc.gov
