I’m sure the rest of you have already figured this out but Yellowjackets is really about the lasting effects of trauma. Specifically, 90s style Gen X trauma. It’s about why we are the way we are.

Given the current circumstances in Minnesota, every other president in my lifetime would be trying to lower the temperature and de-escalate the tension. This president has never seen a fire he didn’t throw gasoline.

@McMattRadio The 1987 movie was actually pretty good. I watched it a few years ago with the boys. Funny, solid action sequences.

Masters of the Universe will get me into a movie theater. Just like it did in 1987. Little kid me is stoked.

JB and I went to see “Materialists” tonight. I really enjoyed it. Been a while since I’ve seen a movie with true pacing and dialogue. Reminded me of a @WhitStillman film—a true compliment.

@LauraRbnsn @ZachWLambert A friend of mine is writing a book on this. The God that the new atheists don’t believe in is very specifically the evangelical God.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions – rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope other institutions follow suit.

Bronson Pinchot sighting! This is an all hands on deck situation. The great comedic actor Bronson Pinchot appears in as a pastry chef (a bit part) in the first episode of the Netflix series, The Residence.

@Bezner Aristotle is great but some of what he wrote about magnificence and magnanimity regarding virtue is downright anti-Christ. Even if it is very much in line with how our values are currently trending.

As one who has read and enjoyed a fair amount of ancient Western philosophy, it’s helpful to remember that Jesus’ moral vision is significantly different from that of the Greeks and Romans. Read them, but differentiate.

I know “We Built This City” has a “worst song of all time” reputation but I’ve always disagreed. It rocks. The joy in that song will not be denied. Also, if you’re not watching Paradise, what are you even doing?

When I was in 8th grade at a private Christian school I learned that, in addition to the earth being 6000 years old, it was once surrounded by a canopy of water that allowed people to live to up to 900 years old. That was in science class. Anyway, school vouchers are a bad idea.

The thing I just can’t get over is that in 2016 and 2024 there were good honorable men and women running in the Republican primary. But so many people in this country didn’t want good or honorable. They wanted the bigot.

I’ve always imagined film versions of C.S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy wherein Ralph Fiennes plays Ransom and Gary Oldman plays Weston. As these actors age this idea just gets better.

In an actual public square, people measure what they are about to say against what the public response will be. They consider how their words will be received by the people in front of them and what the social consequences for speaking those words might be…

I have no expectations that it will be a true public square. But maybe it will be a tool for connecting me to things I’m interested in.

No online platform can be a true public square. The anonymity available to each participant prevents that. Twitter once maintained some semblance of a public square. “X” has devolved into a glorified Reddit comments section. Blue sky… is fun so far…
