The boy who saw seventy bullets pierce through his family in Tammun said: "I asked the soldier, 'Do you love your father and mother?' He replied, 'Yes.' I said to him, 'Then why are you killing my father and mother?' So he slapped me across the face." Noor Abu Salma

@Brendan80704486 @julianHjessop 100% this. Evicted by Britain from their native islands to make way for a US military base. Disgraceful. Won a case to be reinstated in British high court only for Blair's government to order the then monarch to use her royal perogative to ignore the ruling.

@julianHjessop I still don't understand how Mauritius even has a claim on the islands when they are over 2,000km away? The Maldives are closer. And why don't the rights of the 'indigenous people' - the Chagossians evicted in the 1960s - count for anything? Why can't they resettle their land?

I was at the Performance Analysis Community event/Setanta coaching conference/St Joseph's coaching clinic recently. Few quick takeaways from them here. Nothing groundbreaking, but some excellent presentations anyway. Two-pointers♟️ Prepping scenarios 🧠 Learning from defeat 🔄

@SmallerFishGAA Anyone who transfers into a club should have to wait 3 years before they are allowed play in provincial club. Would cut out all the glory hunting & genuine transfers still get full league and county Cship.

@OHareJamie Great to be in touch with you, Jamie. I think the orders were that volunteers should not recognise any part of the imperialist system or plead before its courts, even for actions committed in England. Didn't the Old Bailey bombers refuse to plead guilty or not guilty?

Horrific prospect of ‘expanded military campaign’ by #Israel Over 50,000 civilian deaths in #Gaza from ongoing brutal bombardment; reports now of deaths from starvation due to denial of aid. This genocide must stop. #CeasefireNow

Chilling from Netanyahu. Israel intends to "intensify" action in Gaza which reads as near full invasion. This utterly immoral action happening with the tacit if not full support of the western world. An abandonment of values on a global scale rte.ie/news/world/202…

@afneil @TimesRadio The link between Mauritius and the Chagos is the fact that Britain dumped the native Chagossians there in the 1950s because the Americans didn't want natives getting in the way. A shameful act&humanitarian disaster. The Chagossians should decide on the future of their homeland.

My monologue on today’s The Times at One with Andrew Neil @TimesRadio Baffled we are.   Just why Keir Starmer is so keen to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, then pay it billions to lease them back, is only one of many mysteries currently surrounding the PM — though of rather more geopolitical significance than why he had to see his voice coach during lockdown on Christmas Eve 2020, which currently seems to be exercising the Westminster media more. The deal the government was thought to have sealed last autumn was bad enough. Starmer would cede sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius but lease back Diego Garcia, the part of the archipelago on which America operates a strategic air base it regards as vital to countering Chinese expansion in the region, for 99 years at a cost of £9 billion.  It was hardly the deal of the century.  Britain would be paying billions for something it currently has for free in perpetuity. But a new Mauritian prime minister didn’t think it was good enough. He told his parliament this week that he’d secured an even better deal. Britain’s lease-back payments would now be index-linked to inflation so the cost would rise each year.  He indicated this meant the deal was worth double the original offer of £9 billion, though that is disputed by Whitehall.  But it will require Britain to shell out more — the government won’t say how many billions — and, at a time when the government is strapped for cash, to hand over the bulk of the dosh up front. Mauritius, the UN General Assembly and the International Court of Justice all see this as the return of Britain’s last African colony to its rightful owner. The reality is rather different.  The link between Mauritius and the Chagos Islands is tenuous at best. The two territories are 2,000km apart. They share no pre-colonial history. Mauritius has never had sovereignty over the Chagos Islands. They were merely governed together as colonies when the British chose to administer the islands out of Mauritius between 1903 and 1965, when Mauritius got its independence and renounced any claims on the islands. Now Mauritius gets full sovereignty over them and, it turns out, a veto on whether the lease can be extended for another 40 years. The Starmer government, populated as it is from the PM down, by human rights lawyers steeped in the primacy of international courts and jurisdictions, would do anything to avoid a public spat with the International Court of Justice. That explains why it’s given away the store. The Biden administration went along with it, somewhat reluctantly. Donald Trump? Not so much. The new US administration worries that Mauritius is too cosy with China. It fears it’s already ensnared in China’s debt trap diplomacy in which it’s been showered with borrowing it can’t pay back, giving Beijing leverage over it. Extending its sovereignty over the islands will give Mauritius extensive new rights over the seas surrounding the Chagos Islands, which China could easily exploit to keep tabs on — even threaten — that American base. For the moment Washington has said very little. It already has its hands full. But it’s unlikely Trump will just wave this through.  After all even some of Starmer’s own cabinet ministers are describing the deal as ‘terrible’, ‘mad’, ‘impossible to understand’ and ‘rocket fuel for Farage’s Reform UK’.  So Starmer’s charm offensive to keep the President sweet could be about to be smashed on the reefs of a group of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean.  And suddenly we can no longer be sure we’ll escape these Trump tariffs after all.
