If you are an ordinary person earning an ordinary salary in Copenhagen, and you manage to save 30% of your income every year but don’t own your apartment, then... in effect you become poorer and poorer over time. The reason is that housing prices are rising faster than you save up money. And this has been true for decades. If you do own an apartment, then you are one of the fortunate ones. But if you want to keep living in Copenhagen, rising prices do not really improve your life. The only advantage it brings you in that case is that you can be happy that you are not among the ones getting left behind. It is a soul-destroying dynamic when people cannot move forward despite hard work and diligent saving. Given the amount of housing we build, a study has shown that 88% of the increase in housing costs is due to mass immigration. Few things have had such a large negative impact on the lives of so many people.
