@NASA_Johnson @Astromaterials Prissel collected samples, too, but with a different science question in mind. Novarupta’s chemistry is partly a result of Earth’s plate tectonics. The Moon has volcanic landscapes with similar chemistry, but no plate tectonics. So, what else could explain the parallel?

Tabb Prissel, Aditi Pandey, & Justin Hayles at Novarupta. The dome of dark rubble is what’s left of the volcano itself. Ash erupting from this spot in 1912 buried miles of valley. Afterward, gases escaping through countless fumaroles gave the "Valley of 10,000 Smokes" its name.

In Alaska’s Valley of 10,000 Smokes, glaciers are buried under huge piles of volcanic ash. Mars, too, has debris-covered glaciers. Emileigh Shoemaker & her team used Ground Penetrating Radar to gather info about long stretches of the subsurface before physically breaking ground.

June 1912: The largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century blanketed glaciers with ash in what’s now known as the Valley of 10,000 Smokes. June 2024: NASA's Goddard Instrument Field Team hiked deep into the Valley, seeking answers about icy volcanic landscapes on Earth & Mars.

🚨 New paper alert 🚨 @KrisLaferriere of @PurdueEAPS surveyed the troughs at Mars' north pole, mapping the entire 3D radar volume for subsurface records of troughs' past locations! The migration of these features informs us of ice mass balance over time. doi.org/10.1029/2023JE…
