My guy Chidi “japa’d” to Canada two years ago. On Instagram, the guy is living the dream. Fresh snow in the background. Clean Timberland boots. One hand holding Tim Hortons, the other throwing up peace sign. Captions like “Level don change 🔥” and “God did.” From Lagos, we were all hyping him. “Chidi don blow o.” “See life.” Even his village people were asking his mama for his foreign number. The first three months, every post was fire. New apartment. New winter jacket. “Abroad sweet die.” We believed everything. Then one cold January night, around 2 a.m. my time, my phone rang. It was Chidi. Not voice note. Not “call me back.” A proper international call. I picked up and the first thing I heard was silence… then a tired sigh. “Bro… I dey manage.” He didn’t even wait for me to ask how he was doing. He said he’s working at a warehouse from 4pm till midnight, then rushes to another cleaning job that starts by 6am in some office building. Sometimes he picks up Uber Eats in between if the body allows. “Some days I dey stand for almost 16 hours, Mick. My legs dey swell. But rent no dey send message.” He laughed small, but it wasn’t the usual Chidi laugh. This one sounded heavy. I asked him, “Why you no dey show this side for Instagram na?” He paused. “Show wetin? Say I dey suffer? Make my enemies for Naija begin dance? Make my ex begin send ‘sorry’ with laughing emoji? Abeg.” Then he said something that hit me deep: “Out here, nobody dey clap for you because you dey try. You just dey grind in silence. Back home, them think say I don ‘arrive.’ But the truth be say, I never even land. I’m just not sinking.” He misses the small things. The pure water seller shouting “pure waaater!” in the morning. The generator noise. Even the crazy traffic. Most of all, he misses not feeling like a stranger everywhere he goes. He told me: “Sometimes I go inside bathroom, cry small, wash my face, then go back out like say nothing dey happen. Because life here no get pity. Bills must pay. Documents must renew. Winter must cold.” Now when I see those perfect Instagram posts from people wey japa, I just smile and shake my head. Not every “soft life” is soft. Some na survival with good lighting. Plenty of our brothers and sisters dey out there doing the real work — no filter, no caption, no glory. Just pure hustle, loneliness, and quiet resilience. The abroad dream is sweet from afar. But close up… e get as e be. Sometimes, the person wey dey post “Made it” every week, na the same person wey dey ask God for strength every night.
