If Angela Rayner *had* obtained tax advice, it would have told her to wait a bit until her child turned 18. That would have saved her £40k (and a resignation). Would that have been tax avoidance? I don’t think so. Others may disagree.

@DanNeidle @ZackPolanski They also seem to think that being interested in a tax mistake by a public figure automatically makes you that person’s political opponent. I advise all sorts of people about tax whether I agree with their views or not.

@OMarre @ZackPolanski Most of them don’t seem aware that Polanski apologised. Some of them think the apology was not actually an admission of anything. Mostly they’re just very very angry.

Since I commented on a @DanNeidle post about the @ZackPolanski council tax mistake, some people have started adding me to the strangest lists. Polanski himself has admitted he was wrong- why the abuse?

New idea. Next time we publish a report on a politician, I’ll keep the politician’s name blanked out for a week, and let everyone take positions before they find out who it is.

@DanNeidle The only time I’ve ever been called a “nonce” was by a Polanski supporter on here.

@LordThurlow The loss of prestige of what was traditionally Chancery practice has been gradually happening for years, with no apparent will to reverse it. At least losing the name will bring to an end the line of people who think that reading Bleak House tells them everything to know about it

Can anyone explain why I keep getting these weird sponsored tweets about Robert Peston in my timeline? What’s the grift/con?

@gilescoren A classic of the genre. I remember when a then-future, now-former, PM told me to “fuck off”. I don’t think he was trying to say anything different tho. And noone cared.

@OMarre Very rarely happened to mine. That was very early in the century. 2000-2001. Best was when we found a talking Tigger in Selfridges that was supposed to say “I’m Tigger!” But it sounded very much like “Wanker!” That got everywhere including the front page of the Sun.

Bizarre hearing labour party loyalists suggesting partygate was worse than what’s going on now… I was genuinely horrified by Johnson’s time as PM but no question that partygate - like Johnson generally - was trivial.

@edcumming Never forget my Tatler interview. "Where did you go to school?' 'And before that?' And before that' And before that?' Had to dimly recall attending Brussels English Primary School as a 4 year old...

Just pointing out that I broke the story 7 months ago that Mandelson failed vetting from the security services and put it to Downing Street...so the idea that Downing Street only found out on Tuesday is complete nonsense. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
