SUPERIOR NORTH PARAMEDICS GETTING NEW BASE IN TERRACE BAY
The chief of Superior North EMS is hopeful that construction of a new paramedic base in Terrace Bay will begin in the coming months.
Shane Muir said Tuesday that a lease agreement has been signed for the new base, which will be located off Highway 17 on the west side of Terrace Bay.
Muir said the hope is to break ground on the project in the spring, when the ground thaws.
"If they are quick, we might even be able to get in there and be operational by the end of the year," Muir said. "It might be a little bit of a stretch, but that would be the hope, to get in there by December or January."
Muir said the new station will include ambulance bays, living quarters, a gym, and boardroom.
The project was included in the Superior North EMS master plan, and will be an amalgamation of the existing Terrace Bay and Schreiber stations.
The report notes the current Terrace Bay station — which Muir said is located on hospital property — has a number of shortcomings, including:
❌ Ambulance bays are not drive-thru
❌ Space in the vehicle bays is limited, and there's no room behind the ambulances to remove stretchers
❌ There's no emergency generator or back-up power
❌ Sleeping quarters are limited to a futon in a bedroom/office, and a second bedroom
Meanwhile, the Schreiber station, the report states, also has issues, including a non-drive-thru ambulance bay, lack of backup power, a single washroom and shower, and sleeping quarters inside the station (a futon in a bedroom/office, and lounge furniture).
A report to Terrace Bay council states the base will cost an estimated $4.76 million.
Muir said after the Terrace Bay base is up and running, Superior North EMS will turn its attention to building a new base in the Nipigon-Red Rock area.
"Then we'll be sitting in really good shape for covering the entire region," Muir said.
