Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga. He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India. I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat and our association continued over the years. He had a special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties. He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter's health. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief.

We are blessed to live in a country that has been shaped by the will, the leadership, and the vision of the Right Hon Raila Odinga. With an unshakable faith in the values of our country and the character of our people, Hon Raila Odinga fought for our democracy and led the path towards our new constitutional order. A peacemaker who always put country first, his optimism, strength, and humility epitomised the Kenyan spirit. Hon Raila Odinga always believed that our best days are yet to come. His was a path walked with conviction. He bore the scars of struggle with dignity, knowing that freedom was not free and that truth often demands sacrifice. His life was a testament to the enduring power of a vision grounded in the ideals of democracy, justice, and unity. He was a man who refused to accept the easy path when the right path was harder. There can be no doubt that Hon Raila Odinga was the most significant leader of our democratic experiment. He carried himself with courage and grace and his voice, sometimes fiery, sometimes soft, always echoed with purpose. Hon Odinga is no longer with us, but he has left us stronger and better. We take comfort in the knowledge that he has gone to a better place, a place where rest awaits him. His legacy in Kenya, Africa and on the world stage - as a patriot, a pan-Africanist, and a global statesman - is written in the sands of time. A quintessential progressive and reformer, he fought for the ideals of human rights, democracy, the rule of law and inclusivity and economic opportunity for all until he breathed his last. l have lost a big brother, a mentor, a confidant and a selfless patriot. Every time l needed wise counsel, I turned to him time and again. He never once failed me and told me the truth every time, even when the truth was hard. He has left us a solid foundation built on the rock of faith. It is on that foundation that we shall find our way forward, inspired by his example, his legacy and optimism that our future is great. From my immediate family, Rachel and the children, we want to assure Mama Ida, Rosemary, Raila Junior, Winnie, Senator Oburu and the entire Odinga family that we stand with them in this moment of grief. Above all, l urge all Kenyans to join hands as we celebrate the incredible legacy of this towering figure in our history.

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE FROM H.E. UHURU KENYATTA FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF FORMER PRIME MINISTER HON. RAILA AMOLO ODINGA. My heart is heavy, and my spirit is burdened with a grief that is both profound and deeply personal. The news of Raila’s passing has left a silence that echoes across our nation, a silence where once there was a voice of thunder and conviction. To me, Raila was more than a political colleague; he was a defining part of my own journey, in public service and in life. Raila and I were navigators on opposing currents, charting different courses for the nation we both loved. At some point along that journey, we became political opponents and often, the weight of that competition felt immense. Baba, as we fondly referred to him, was a man who made you sharpen your own ideas, compelling you to defend your positions with rigor and passion. However, in the recent years, a different bond was forged; one of respect, of shared patriotism, and a common desire to see a united Kenya. That journey from fierce political opponents to partners in the pursuit of “Handshake” unity taught me the true measure of the man. I saw firsthand his unwavering passion for this country, his deep-seated belief in justice, and his incredible capacity to think beyond personal ambition for the sake of national peace. He was a formidable opponent, but he was an even more invaluable ally in the cause of reconciliation. I have lost a friend and a brother. I will miss our conversations sometimes challenging, always insightful and the fire of belief that never left his eyes. To Mama Ida, the children, and the entire Odinga family, I extend my deepest, most heartfelt condolences. You have shared Baba with Kenya for a lifetime, and we mourn with you. We have lost a father to the nation, a steadfast champion for the people, and a true son of Kenya. His legacy is not just in the political battles he fought, but in the peace he helped build. It is etched in the very fabric of our nation. Rest in peace, my brother. Your work here is done, but your echo will never fade. H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, C.G.H 4th President of the Republic of Kenya 15th October, 2025.

#US#Ethiopia: Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended “congratulations to Ethiopia” on the 34th anniversary of May 28, conveying Washington’s readiness to work on “areas of mutual interest.” In a brief statement issued on 27 May, Rubio said the U.S. values “more than a century of diplomatic relations” with Ethiopia and expressed hope for “many more years of cooperation and friendship.” He stated that the U.S. is prepared to engage in joint efforts “to promote trade and investment for economic growth” and to “advance peace through dialogue.” Rubio also conveyed his “best wishes” to “Ethiopia and all its people” on the occasion of the National Day. May 28, 1991 marks a pivotal moment in Ethiopia’s history as a coalition of armed forces under the umbrella of the #EPRDF ended the 17 years brutal dictatorship of the #Derg and paved ways for the birth of the current Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (#FDRE). This year, May 28 is being commemorated without official national holiday status, following the approval of a new proclamation by the House of People’s Representatives. The proclamation, numbered 1334/2024, aims to “establish nationwide standards for the observance of public holidays” and excludes May 28 from the list of official holidays. According to the chair of the Health, Social Development, Culture, & Sports Standing Committee, the law is intended to preserve the “cultural, spiritual, social, and economic values” of public holidays and ensure they are celebrated in a “peaceful and harmonious” manner.

BREAKING: Somalia offers US operational control of two airports and two Gulf of Aden seaports. The president of Somalia has written to his US counterpart Donald Trump, offering him “exclusive operational control” of two strategic airports and two ports. In an unprecedented letter dated March 16, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud tells Trump that Somalia is prepared to offer the United States “exclusive operational control over the Balidogle and Berbera airbases, as well as the Port of Berbera and Bosaso.” “These strategically positioned assets provide an opportunity to bolster American engagement in the region, ensuring uninterrupted military and logistical access while preventing external competitors from establishing a presence in this critical corridor,” he said in the letter. The story was first reported by semafor.com/article/03/28/…. The plan to offer airports and ports to the US was also confirmed a 2nd source. Both Ballidogle and Berbera have been airbases for Somalia’s airforces during the era of late military ruler Mohamed Siyad Barre. Ballidogle is in Lower Shabelle region, 90km west of Mogadishu is already home to a small number of US forces who train Somali soldiers. Mohamud also offers the strategic airbases along with the ports of Berbera and Bosaso both locating on the strategic coastline of the Gulf of Aden. Berbera locates in Somaliland which announced secession from the rest of Somalia in May 1991 but did not gain international recognition. Somaliland signed agreement with UAE’s DP World to transform the port. P&O Ports, a subsidiary of DP World, was also at one time involved in effort to upgrade Bosaso port in the semiautonomous region of Puntland. @HassanSMohamud invokes the old partnership between Somalia and US which started during president Ronald Reagan’s era when the former military government permitted the US to have operational use of three airports - Mogadishu, Kismayo and Berbera. In his letter to Trump, the president of Somalia says he is committed to strengthening the partnership between the two countries. “Under your administration, the United States has reinforced its leadership in advancing security and global stability, and we recognize the importance of working together to further these objectives in the Horn of Africa and beyond,” the letter said. “Today, with evolving global dynamics, we see a renewed opportunity to deepen this collaboration in ways that serve both our nations' interests and contribute to the security of the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, and the wider region.” Mohamud expressed willingness to initiate discussions on the proposal and wants to Trump to send a U.S. delegation to Mogadishu “at a time of mutual convenience.”
