The Supreme Court of Ghana has settled an interesting question which sometimes comes up in divorce cases. When for instance a wife sues for divorce and names “the other woman" whom she alleges to be having an affair with her husband in her petition, must that woman be joined to the case as a party? (works the other way round as well) The court answered: not always. Sometimes yes. This is the decision in the case of Vida Yeboah v Dr Stephen Yeboah & Mercy Agyeiwaa decided on 29th April 2026. In April 2019, Vida Yeboah filed for divorce against her husband, Dr Stephen Yeboah, at the High Court, Agona Swedru. The fact in support of her claim that the marriage had broken down beyond reconciliation was adultery, and she named one Mercy Agyeiwaa as the woman the husband was seeing. According to the petition, the husband had even moved Mercy from Kasoa into a new flat about twenty feet from the matrimonial home in Gomoa Oguaakrom. When Mercy got wind of the petition, she did not stay quiet. She applied to be joined as a party. Her position was interesting. That she was no side chick. She said she was already the husband's customary wife from 15th July 2012, two whole years before Vida and Stephen's 2014 ordinance wedding. She tendered photographs of the customary ceremony and named witnesses. She also said she had contributed her own money to the very properties Vida was asking the court to share equally. The High Court allowed her to join. The Court of Appeal threw her out, saying her presence would only "murky the waters". The Supreme Court has now restored her place and sent the matter back to the High Court for trial. The Supreme Court however cautioned that this judgment is no general invitation for every named "party" to walk into a divorce. In its own words, persons "commonly referred to in Ghana as 'side chicks' or 'side guys'" generally have no place as parties in a divorce. If the only thing such a person can offer is to admit having had something with someone else's spouse, the most they can ever be is a witness. It noted that Section 12 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1971 uses "may", not "shall" and that joinder is at the discretion of the court, not automatic. What set Mercy apart is that she did not show up with just a denial. She brought two legal issues: a competing customary marriage which, if proved, would invalidate the very marriage Vida wanted dissolved; and a property claim in the assets Vida was asking the court to share equally. This the court reasoned made her presence necessary for the trial court to settle the matters in dispute.

By the way, this narrative that last night somehow invalidates a wonderful Afcon and the growth of the competition is nonsense. The Euros didn't become a bad tournament when Figo walked off the pitch in 2000 and Portugal's players hounded match officials after an ET pen call.

I’m discussing rising prices of basic street food in Ghana, despite some farmers selling at cheaper prices. A coconut farmer and trader from Gomoa Afransi gave us a breakdown of the coconut business. Famers in Gomoa sell 100 pieces of coconut for GHC120. That means the farm gate price of one coconut is GH1.20 pesewas as at September 2025. Farmer makes GHS 3,600 for 3,000 pieces of coconuts. The distributors purchase 100 pieces for GHS120 then pay the pluckers, the carriers and load each truck with 3,000 pieces of coconuts. A truck driver from Gomoa to Accra for instance is paid GHS1,800. That cost is by their trade custom, borne by the distributors. The distributors therefore sell to the retailers for GHS 3.20 for a piece of coconut. That means a GHS2 addition to the farmgate price. A distributor makes GHS9,600 for the 3,000 pieces his operational cost inclusive. Then come retailers and the selling joints. Coconut is currently selling at between 7-10 cedis. The 3,000 pieces of coconut for 8 cedis a piece is 24,000. The difference between farmer income GHSS3,600 (for one truckload) and market seller GHS24,000 is GHS 20,400. Do The Maths.

Bread & butter analysis of a layman Hourly minimum wage in UK £12. Price of 400g bread is averagely £1.5. Meaning the lowest earner in UK can buy 6 loaves from one hour of work. ONE HOUR DAILY minimum wage in Ghana was 18.15. Loaf of bread is average GHS 20. The lowest earner in Ghana cannot buy one loaf of bread from a whole day of work. It is not that life in these countries is easy but at least when you have a decent job work, you are able to afford basic necessities of life. Salary is important but unless it takes into account the cost of living vis a vis purchasing power.

QUESTIONS FOR JOHN MAHAMA I have just read questions posed to me by former President Mahama. I would have thought he would be man enough to face me in a one-on-one debate for the Ghanaian public to assess our respective policies, achievements and visions. He should not hide behind these flimsy questions to avoid a debate. Come for a debate and I can ask the moderators to ask me these five flimsy questions. But I have many more substantive questions for him: 1. Can you name any broad-based social intervention policy that you implemented in Ghana as President? 2. Why did you run advertisements against free SHS? 3. If you think your economic management was so good how come we experienced more than four years of Dumsor under your government? 4. Why did the banking system almost collapse under your government? 5. Why did you cancel teacher training allowances? 6. Why did you cancel nursing training allowances 7. Why did the National Ambulance service virtually collapse under your government? 8. Why was your government unable to create even a quarter of the jobs that our government has created? 9. How many nurses, teachers, police officers, immigration officers and service personnel did you recruit as President? 10. Why did you implement the three-month pay policy for teachers under the government? 11. Why did you cancel the car import duty waiver for teachers and nurses? 12. Why was average agricultural growth under your government (2.9%) less than half what it is under our government 13. Why was industry growth under your government lower than what it is under our government? 14. Why was overall GDP growth under your government lower than under our government? 15. Why did your government have no industrial policy for Ghana? 16. Why do you think our government has constructed four times more roads than your government did? 17. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more hospitals than your government did? 18. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more schools than your government did? 19. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more fish landing sites than your government did? 20. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more courts than your government did? 21. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more public libraries than your government did? 22. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more sports facilities than your government did? 23. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more airports than your government did? 24. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing and equipping more TVET institutions than your government did? 25. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more interchanges than your government did? 26. Why do you think our government has overseen the provision of more NCA licensed fibre optic cable than your government did? 27. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more sanitation facilities than your government did? 28. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more waste recycling plants than your government did? 29. Why do you think our government has provided 70% more scholarships to students than your government? 30. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more infrastructure in the Zongo communities than your government did? 31. Why do you think our government has provided more vehicles and equipment to the security services than your government did? 32. Why do you think our government has constructed and is constructing more hospitals than your government did? 33. How come your government was unable to issue any significant amount of the National Identity Card (Ghanacard)? 34. Why was your government unable to deal with the problem of Ghost workers on government payroll? 35. During your period as president only 4% of Ghanaian adults had Tax Identification Numbers. Our government has increased it to 85%. Why were you unable to do similar? 36. Why was your government unable to digitalize the operations at the port to reduce corruption? 37. Why was your government unable to solve the problem of the lack of a functioning Ghana-wide property address system? 38. Why was your government not able to solve the problem of access to financial inclusion like we have? 39. What help did your government provide children suffering from cancer, sickle cell patients and people needing kidney dialysis? 40. Why did you fulfill only 28% of your promises in your 2012 Manifesto? 41. What measures did your government implement to address the problem that people have in paying rent advance? 42. What did you do to help people who had difficulty in enrolling for or renewing their National health insurance memberships? 43. What did your government do specifically to promote the creative arts and tourism? 44. How did your government address the problem of getting emergency drug, blood and vaccine delivery to remote parts of Ghana in times of emergency? 45. How did your government address the problem of tertiary students who could not access student loans because they could not find guarantors? 46. As Vice-President, I have initiated or championed policies such as One Constituency One Ambulance, Agenda 111, Medical Drones, Zongo Development Fund, E-Pharmacy, Ghanacard, Digital Property Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, Paperless Ports, No Guarantor Student Loans, Ghana.Gov, Citizens App, Go-Ride, Gold for Oil, Bank of Ghana Gold Purchase Program, District Road Improvement Program (DRIP) etc. ? Can you tell Ghanaians what policies you championed or initiated as Vice-President? 47. Why were you unable to implement Free Technical and Vocational Education as we have done? 48. Why was your government unable to absorb examination registration fees for BECE and WACSSE students 49. Can you provide one coherent explanation of your 24-hour economy proposal? 50. What specific measures did you implement to combat corruption during your tenure as president?

Ghana’s biggest football club Asante Kotoko were set to travel to the United States for a friendly with DC United. But only about 7 players of the entire team could secure visas. Now there’s an suggestion of drafting in players from other clubs with valid US visas to make up the numbers. I can’t make this up!

Here are the faces behind the famous Kofi Kyinto beheading case at Sefwi Bekwai in the 1980’s. Afi or Affi was Kofi’s uncle. The story was made into a movie, titled ‘Kofi Nkrabea’. All four culprits were executed, that’s why you see the red-inked crosses on their foreheads.
