The National Weather Service has canceled the Tornado Watch for Washington, DC. However, a line of showers and thunderstorms is still expected to move through the area between 8 PM and 10 PM tonight (3/16), with wind gusts up to 45–55 mph possible. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until midnight. Continue to use caution when traveling this evening, particularly in wooded areas, where strong winds may bring down branches or debris, and on low-lying roads or trails near water. Never travel through flooded roads. Severe storms are forecasted today. Conditions will be dangerous. We're asking everyone to come inside ASAP; we have space for anyone who needs it. Hypo shelters are extended to 24 hrs. through 7AM on Wed, 3/18. Call the Shelter Hotline if you see someone in need: 202-399-7093.

Severe weather in the forecast could include damaging winds of up to 80 mph. That means that we could expect downed trees throughout the District. Wait until after the storm passes—and if you see downed trees in your neighborhood, report to 311. In an emergency, call 911.

Today, at Oxon Hill Elementary School's career day the OUC team had the opportunity to speak with students about the importance of knowing when and how to call 911 in the event of an emergency and how they could pursue a career in emergency communications.

This week, Director McGaffin and the Office of Unified Communications hosted the 2026 @MWCOG 911 Directors Summit. Emergency Communications Centers representing the NCR met to discuss regional interoperability and issues affecting communications centers and their teams.

In March 2021, call taker Janay guided Debra Lappin's then fiancé Craig through life-saving CPR until responders arrived. Each year on the anniversary of the call, Craig and Debra visit the OUC to share their story and highlight the essential role of emergency call takers.
