"I don’t know which made me more excited, to be in Sandy Koufax`s Motel or to be in a
room right beside Sly Stone, from Sly and the Family Stone."
Sandy Koufax was looking to supplement his Los Angeles Dodgers salary when he bought the "Tropicana Motel", on Santa Monica Boulevard in 1962.
Clientele at the time consisted mostly of musicians, mystics and B-list television character actors.
Koufax wanted to bring in new business and added his name to the marquee, banking on his fame to draw better heeled guests.
The rich and famous, though, didn’t patronize “Sandy Koufax’s Tropicana Motel” as Sandy had hoped.
Jim Morrison of the Doors liked to drink way too much at the "The Palms", a low-rent
lesbian bar across the street from the Tropicana.
Morrison would then stumble back across Santa Monica Boulevard and pass out at the Tropicana.
Tom Waits lived at the Tropicana for nine years with a Steinway upright piano jammed into his room’s kitchenette and recorded his great album "Small Change" there.
Ricky Lee Jones wrote “Chuck E`s in Love” on the piano in Tom Waits room.
Van Morrison wrote “T.B. Sheets” and other songs while staying there.
Big Brother & the Holding Company, Bob Marley & the Wailers, and Alice Cooper all worked out of, and lived in, the Tropicana.
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham holed up at the Tropicana when they first came to Hollywood, as did Joan Jett, Blondie, and Tom Petty.

@MaxBoot Whilst demonstrating our many military vulnerabilities and utter lack of a professional diplomatic corps (having decimated it) in the Gulf to no apparent aim. But hey, we can blow up tiny insignificant boats for a few million bucks!
English

I wrote on Monday about Pete Hegseth and Gen. Francis Donovan ramping up lawless boat strikes, which amount to extrajudicial killing. This week there have been 3 more strikes! Truly out of control. Awful that the US military is doing this and the world barely notices. wapo.st/4tOygA5

@UkrainianAna Very sorry they're doing this in my name. This dark chapter in our history can't end soon enough
English

In fairness, they did do something.
Blackmailed, pressured, berated and insulted us, the victim, attempting to force capitulation.
And sucked Putin's dick.
P. S. Can we appreciate that through the entire process our "mediators" didn't even visit Kyiv once? 🙃
But went to Moscow to smile and take pics with Putin like fangirls several times.

@CourtyardBrew New Orleans drivers are paying $4 a gallon, nearly double what they paid a year ago, American Automobile Association data shows.
But a city rule bars cab drivers from raising their fares in response. That rule says drivers must seek City Council approval before making any change

"I was cable when cable wasn't cool."
I've kept this advertisement from Ted Turner in my office all these years. I was a junior at the University of Maryland when a counselor said, "You really need an internship. There's this crazy millionaire who has the idea for a 24-hour news channel. It probably won't work but it should be good experience for you."
I walked into the CNN Washington, DC studios just a few months after the network launched on June 1, 1980. It wasn't even CNN yet; it would be months before they shortened "Cable News Network." I caught the news bug big time. It was so exciting to see history being made every day, and to be part of the mad scramble to find out what was happening and report it to the world.
I worked hard, asked a lot of questions, and after a few weeks, CNN offered a full-time job as a video editor. I quickly took on a field producing role, working from the State Department and Pentagon, and sometimes from Capitol Hill and the White House, even traveling overseas. About a year after arriving, I had my first appearance on camera. Reporters usually hone their craft at TV stations in small cities and work their way up; I had to get up to speed while on a national stage.
At that time, CNN had an interesting mix -- older veterans lured from the networks, including Bernard Shaw, the anchor from CBS and ABC. (What a great guy, personally.) We also had a force of young, scrappy producers, writers, editors and field crews who may not have had the resume yet, but who worked like hell to get it right.
I feel fortunate to have experienced that, and I always remember Ted Turner fondly as the maverick who changed television news forever ... and gave me a shot.
